Owner description: State park campground in forest and along river.

Take a float trip down this river any day of the year. The northern reaches (east of I-75) have plenty of shade for even a scorching summer's day. Early spring is a delight - many birds nest nearby and can be heard and seen along the river.
The water is slow and cool. The gators likewise. Lots of insects as the weather warms up, though - bring plenty of repellent.

Hillsborough State park just north of Tampa has canoe rentals When we went it was May and we saw multiple alligators and turtles resting on the tree branches jutting out into the river. They did not seem to mind that we were canoeing right by them, so it was interesting to be that close and still feel relatively safe.

There are several parks on the river off of Morris Bridge Road and Lettuce Leaf Park. What fun places to just enjoy nature. The river in downtown Tampa is also a great place to take a walk and enjoy the sights and sounds.

The Hillsborough River State Park off Fletcher or Fowler Ave (not sure which everytime sorry!!!), is simply brilliant.

I lived in Tampa for ten years, and this was probably my favourite spot to just go for walks and get away from everything. With the Tampa, Brandon and to a lesser extent Temple Terrace area, being such urban sprawls and jungles, it's nice to have such places to get away to.

There are miles of trails and paths to go walking and cycling, loads of varied wildlife to see, and plenty to do, such as running, kayaking, fishing, and camping. They have a fully working campsite and trailer area, with bathrooms, and there is also a small (quite decent actually) cafe/restaurant.

It's been over a year so I don't remember if there is an entrance fee, but I am fairly sure there isn't, which is wonderful considering most parks you go to there is. I could be wrong though (if I am, it's minimal).

They have friendly, compassionate groundstaff and volunteers on site, always fixing bridges, chopping down trees, and caring for the wildlife and grounds.

If you are in the Tampa area, and want to get away from the urban mess for a couple of hours, plus, want to have a taste of the untouched Florida, then take a trip out to the Hillsborough River State Park and relax.

Take a picnic and a significant other!! :)

It's really hard to find a way to get onto the river unless you know the area. It's pretty, but it looks like many rivers in the area.
