Owner description: Do you see yourself looking over the vast Serengeti plains, searching the horizon for a glimpse of a pride of Lions, or a Leopard lounging in the trees? Do you imagine yourself in India, riding an elephant through the high grass with your eyes peeled for the elusive Tiger? Have you ever thought how great it would be to hike through the rainforest, listening to the tropical birds, ever on the lookout for a Leopard or an Ocelot high in the canopy? Have you ever been to the zoo and wanted to be closer to the exotic cats; so close you could almost touch them? You don't have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to make these dreams come true. The world's largest accredited big cat rescue facility is right here in Tampa, Florida at Big Cat Rescue.

My family and I drove from New Jersey on vacation and one of our big vacation activities was Big Cat Rescue. We had an awesome tour guide named Erin. She was very knowledgeable and able to answer all of our questions. Her and the other interns we spoke to were extremely enthusiastic about all of their cats. You can really tell that these amazing creatures are in good paws! The workers all have favorite cats and really do care about the well being of them. There morals about the cats being wild animals and not pets or disposable tools for human entertainment are exactly how we should treat them and other wild animals. Big cat rescue has a wide variety of wild cats from the beautiful tiger named Alex to Nico the adorable Geoffroy's Cat. They also have many ways to be able to really see the cats like feeding tours and even private tours. All the money goes to help their animals but they are able to stay up and running with the unpaid yet extremely dedicated volunteers and interns like our tour guide Erin. I highly recommend Tampa's Big Cat Rescue over any zoo or other wild life sancuary for a wonderful family friendly time! Plus they have lots of fun things in the gift shop and all proceeds go to the kitties!

“Big Cat Sanctuary, with kids.”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

This attraction has been on our list of things to do for awhile, but it always got pushed aside. This year, I arranged a trip for me and my kids, ages 7 and 8. The sanctuary limits the hours that children are permitted. So, for one hour on Saturdays and Sundays, you can bring them and allow them to learn more about these beautiful animals.

Unlike a zoo, the animals here aren't put in these cages to entertain people. In fact as we began our tour, we stopped at a cage where one cat was getting visibily agitated by the presence of so many people. The caretaker noticed immediately and ushered us away explaining what was happening. She directed us to another area and explained the cat's background and why she was reacting the way she had.

During the tour, the guides discuss the animals and their natural habitats and prey and do so sensitively as the age range of the children present vary. We had a mix of kids, many of them old enough to ask great questions. The length of the tour was perfect, just about an hour. There was plenty of give and take information going back and forth. There were actually three guides walking with us, so if you were in th back, one was there to assist with more information you might have missed.

The location of the site is a little odd, but the website has good directions and there is a new sign up that lets you know where to make the turn into the premises (it's funny rambling down the dirt path smack in the middle of a busy Tampa area, but also kind of adventurous for the kids).

Definitely wear boots, especially in the rainy months, as it is muddy.

We enjoyed this very much, and it was a wonderful departure from the usual touristy t
Amusement parks. I enjoyed having the kids take a few moments to learn something as use it as an opportunity to talk about animals and nature.

“Thankful there are angels for the cats”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Behind a strip mall it's amazing to realize how many big cats make there home at BCR. I have been several times and am amazed that people would try to domesticate these beautiful creatures.
