Owner description: Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo is home to more than 1300 animals and famous for having one of the most beautiful, tropical zoological settings in the world. The Zoo brings together animals and visitors to create unforgettable, natural connections. Guests get closer to wildlife than ever before by touching a giant tortoise, feeding a giraffe, getting nose-to-horn with an Indian rhino, hand-to-fin with slippery stingrays and more! Families can also splash in water play areas, feel thrills on rides and take in educational shows. Love manatees? The Zoo is the only place in Tampa where guests can see Florida manatees year round. At the David A. Straz Jr. Manatee Hospital, the Zoo’s veterinary and animal-care staff treat sick, injured and orphaned manatees, and return them to the wild after rehabilitation. The Zoo also cares for the most diverse group of Florida wildlife anywhere, and has won numerous awards for animal preservation.

Lowry Park Zoo is a must see attraction. I have visited many zoos -North Carolina, Bronx, Jacksonville, National, Atlanta and more and it remains a favorite. I love the African exhibit including the baby elephant and the rhino feeding. Where else would you get to pet a rhino and get to see African elephants in the same day? I also like the interactive exhibits where you can feed or pet giraffes, white rhinos, camels, stingrays, parrots and petting zoo animals. The zoo has many rides and my favorites are the camel ride and the treetop safari. This zoo is great and I highly recommend it over Busch Gardens.

We wanted an inexpensive day trip during our St Pete beach vacation and a friend had recommended this zoo. Since we had reciprocity with our MIchigan Zoo membership, the whole family got in for about $25. We spent over 4 hours there, mainly because of the water play area, a small collection of fountains in the special children's zoo. Bring swimsuits and a towel. The petting zoo was big hit too, the calmest goats I've ever seen. My kids enjoyed the chairlift ride that goes over the length of the zoo ($4/each). There were other rides as well but since they all cost at least $2 each per ride (too much!) we didn't go on any others. The food was okay, not great, there was a place that sold BBQ sandwiches and ice tea which was decent, lots of shaded tables. Yeah the bathrooms weren't great but they weren't the worst either. The animal exhibits were very lush, natural and well done. My only complaint would be the way it was laid out, it needs more pathways to cut from one area of the zoo to the other. Prepare for lots of walking the way they have it if you want to see the whole thing.

We wanted to spend the day at the Lowry Park Zoo, however, after seeing the filthy restrooms and then trying to find a place for a healthy meal, we left after a few hours. This Zoo does not understand, that in order to be family friendly the Zoo needs to be clean and public restrooms need to be useable. Also, a Zoo that attracts families cannot expect that everyone is willing to eat processed foods. The Zoo would be fined and possibly closed if it would serve its animals the poor quality of food that it serves to its guests. Pack a lunch and stay clear of the restrooms.

Lowry Park Zoo is a perfectly safe and child friendly zoo. I have been there numerous times and have always had great experiences. There is always something new to see and do. Right now there is a baby elephant.

I would highly recommend this zoo. It was rated the #1 family zoo in USA.

Throughout the park there are electric wires to keep the animals in. The problem is many of these wires are within reach of a childs arm(without climbing). My daughter spent 9hrs in the hospital after getting a shock from one of these wires at the meerkat nursury. There are no signs that let you know about these wires. And they are easliy reached by a child as young as 7 years old. This was not the only place we saw wires within reach. And by within reach I do mean with out climbing. If you plan on still going to the Lowery Park Zoo do not let your kids stand aginst the walls or fences that keep the animals in.
