When you are visiting Tampa, this old Grand Hotel turned Museum and class rooms is worth a visit. There are many photographs of old Tampa and treasures of the period from around the world.

This museum has many furnishings and artifacts from the original hotel and from the time period (the hotel was built in1891 and stopped operating in 1931). It will certainly give you a good feel for the early days of Tampa. I like that they have numbers and an acoustiguide as you can walk around and look and listen to the history. There is also a video which I wish were in the very beginning but if you go to the left in the hallway, you'll see the video screen in a room on the right hand side. Watch this first and then go back and start at #1. It will give you a good overview of what you are going to see. The jewelry exhibit was amazing.

Plant build this 551 room hotel for the tourist coming to Fl. on his railroad. He spent 3 million dollars on the building of the hotel and $500,000 on the contents. The building belongs to the University of Tampa and they use it for student housing. A small part of the building has been restore to original state. We enjoyed the tour. The oldest operating Otis elevator is in the student section as are the ballroom and dinning room.

Gives you a good feel for the development of early Tampa and the US cigar industry. (I am not a cigar smoke, but I find the history of the industry interesting.)

We just walked around the campus. The Plant Hotel was a fabulous sight to see. Don't miss this building, and take in the museum too. We didn't have time.
