Owner description: Once the cigar capital of the world, Ybor City is now a thriving community.

Stopped here during our 2013 Christmas holiday. Had been here before about 25 years ago and love it. Don't waste your time unless your shopping for cigars. Nothing much to do during the day and a bit scary walking around. The Columbia Restaurant is the area's only saving grace! A must eat/see/do if you are in the area.

From Chicago and came down to Anna Maria Island for a month in January. Love the areas around Sarasota, Clearwater, etc. and have been down this way many times but hadn't been to Ybor City in 25 years since we are usually at the beaches. Went on a Monday at Noon and blown away by the great history, shops in old buildings from the late 1800's, the Columbian restaurant, and 20 other restaurants/bars etc. We will return again for some of the history and tours provided at the museum, go to some bars and try some more restaurants. There is also an old Italian society building that looks neat, a movie theatre with 20 options, and an old movie theatre that looks like it holds concerts, etc. Several bars and clubs for the younger folk also and we hear that it is very busy at night. Many different restaurant options including Cuban sandwiches but also Italian, Turkish, Greek, Steak, delis, sandwiches and you name it. Several tatoo parlors, shops, etc. Highly recommend the La France store that is in an old historic building and has tons of unique clothing, gifts, etc. and fantastic service. We loved walking down the long main street and popping in and out of places and also want to go buy some cigars and smoke one at the many cigar shops some of which have seating areas/bars and more. Very cool place and well worth a visit. If you have kids I'd go durning the day, grab lunch, take a walk and maybe go to a movie but for the most part it's something that most adults would appreciate and love like we did.

Our third year in a row to be in Ybor City for the nighttime Outback Bowl parade and welcome in the New Year was great! With the parade beginning at 5:30 p.m., we include the kids, who ask each year to attend the parade as they LOVE to catch the beads/etc. which are thrown to the crowd lining the street. It's a very festive time, and the floats are fun to watch (as well as the crowd, of course!). It's not a lengthy parade, but it's best to arrive a few minutes early to find a place along the historic street area. Parking is available in city parking garages, at reasonable rates! The marching bands and cheerleaders of the two competing bowl college teams (this year, the LSU Tigers and the Iowa Hawkeyes) have a pep rally "competition" at the end of the parade route. We had a great time in the courtyard of a local restaurant/bar after the parade (good food!), and then we scooted out of the area by 9:00 or 10:00 . . . we actually rang in the new year at the home of an individual who lived a short distance away. Yes, families can have lots of fun in Ybor City . . . a fairly early exit might be prudent, though <g>.

Ybor was a fun place to wonder around in. Several blocks of funky bars, lots of eateries, etc. Everyone seemed to having a great time.

As other reviewers already stated, Ybor City is like the French Quarter in New Orleans, but without the character and charm. Nothing but bars and clubs offering beer and cheap pizza stretched down two streets. The only nice restaurant was Columbia, which was worth the visit.
