This park is absolutely beautiful at night. I love the lights in the water and the view of the capitol building. Cascades is the best place to go if you're looking to take a walk but want to avoid the mess of the city. This is a good place for a picnic and it's ideal for dates or family outings.

Recently the Tallahassee Historical Society had the privilege of being invited to the Word of South, which is an annual festival, featuring mainly literary and musical
programs. So, history was an addition. It's a beautiful landscaped setting, where
walkers, joggers and tourists come. It even has a recreated sort of waterfall, you will see why shortly. The site itself is historical in nature as it was selected in 1823 to be the seat of Government for the Territory of Florida. Previously legislators had to take turns going to meetings either at Pensacola or St. Augustine, the two major cities at the time. Governor Duval chose two commissioners to explore and select a centralized location most convenient for members of the two cities. They were Dr. Williams H. Simmons from St. Augustine and John Lee Williams, a lawyer from Pensacola. It was at this site in the Tallahassee country that they met and determined that the capital of the State be located. The beauty of the Cascade, as it was later called, and the surrounding forests and hills "won the day." Williams described it as, "a deep gulf which had been scooped out by a stream entering the Earth...a hole fourteen feet deep...The stream, which falls into this gulf over a bank twenty or thirty feet in height,, is sufficiently large to turn an overshot mill." In this area the city of Tallahassee was to grow and develop.

This is a great park relatively close to the State Capital. Nice walkways and a place to unwind. I wish there was some information about the history of the location and its association with the Native Americans who had lived here.

Visited this park for a 5K run event and festival. The park has a nice walking trail. The amphitheater is very nice. Festivals and concerts are held at this venue often. People bring their dogs to this park.
