Po'Boys relies on its fame around town as a gameday hotspot to dupe people into paying exorbitant prices for mediocre food. All the while, these same people are supporting a manager who cuts costs to no ends, attempts to break the law with no regard, and doesn't actually care about their customers.
Our time at Po'Boys started out okay. We were visiting on the Friday night before a Saturday evening game. The place was about half-empty and a waitress told us to sit wherever we'd like. So, we ended up sitting in a booth near the window. Soon after we sat down, we noticed there were a bunch of flies flying around the area. This should have been our first warning, but I brushed it off and gave them the benefit of the doubt.
Our waitress was great - very friendly and refilled our drinks on a regular basis. However, our food took a long time to arrive. I ordered the BBQ Pork Platter and my boyfriend ordered the blackened fish poboy. We both agreed that the food tasted good. However, it was very overpriced. The fish poboy was about $10 for a sandwich ONLY with no sides (no fries or chips or anything else) and did not have a lot of meat or toppings on it.
Then, when the check came, there were two discrepancies. First of all, the waitress informed us that they did not take Groupons on gameday weekends. So, we asked to speak to the manager. We were upset because we did not know this, and went there with the intention of using our Groupon. Keep in mind that the Groupon we were using was a $20 voucher that I had already prepaid for. We explained to the manager that the Groupon did not list any black-out dates, the establishment had entered into a contract with Groupon, and that they had to accept our Groupon. We explained that had we known they would not accept our Groupon, we probably would not have gone as the whole point of our visit was to use the Groupon that I had already paid for. We further explained that even upon entering the establishment, there were no signs that said they did not accept Groupons on gameday weekends. We were never told about this policy (which is technically illegal) until we had already eaten and it came time to pay for our food. After this, the manager said he would accept our Groupon, and blamed our waitress for not telling us about the policy before we ordered. I felt it was highly inappropriate for the manager to blame the waitress, as it should not be her responsibility to tell this to every customer, especially since it is an illegal policy that the restaurant should not have in the first place. All the while they were implying that this policy was because the restaurant was so busy, when it was only about half-full!
Our second issue with the check is that they charged us $2 extra for something that was supposed to be included in the price of our meal. However, after the Groupon fiasco, we were ready to just leave, so paid the check without arguing.
However, these are not our only complaints. The restroom was DISGUSTING! There was human feces covering the toilet paper and other areas. It was not even useable. Again, keep in mind that this is during a time when the place is only about HALF-FULL and a day before the game, so they cannot blame it on any sort of rush.
The worst part of the experience, though, was that my boyfriend ended up getting food poisoning from his food and was for the entire rest of the weekend. It made him so sick that he wasn't even able to sleep Saturday night.
Don't ruin your weekend! Choose to eat someplace else that has better service and a cleaner atmosphere. Gordo's and Jim & Milt's are both right across the street, have much better management, are much cleaner, and I have never known anyone that got food poisoning after eating at either of those establishments. Po'Boys is badly managed, disgusting, and should be closed down.
