This place is a dump!! We live nearby and booked a room for out-of-town guests who wanted to stay near our home. I was MORTIFIED at the condition of the room(s). The first room they were assigned (on the first floor) reeked of smoke and mildew - hurricane damage that was was never repaired, even two years later. After complaining about the stench, they were moved to an upstairs room; it did not smell, thankfully, but had not been renovated in some 40-50 years. The decor was tacky, tacky, tacky. For $140.00, one would expect better

Our friends wanted to fish and tried to make arrangements at the front desk for boat rental; they were offered a tiny boat at an exhorbitant price, which proved to be the "last straw." Our guests promptly checked out, cancelling their 7-day reservation, and moved to a lovely - and lower priced - property in Key West.

I was most embarrassed to have subjected them to this awful "resort." Never again will I make a reservation at an old(er) motel without first checking the rooms. Rumor has it that the Sugarloaf Lodge was up for sale; perhaps that is why it was allowed to fall into such a decrepit condition.

My family and I stayed here only one night on the way to Key West. The kids and I really enjoyed it but my wife wasn't crazy about it. The place is old and the furnishings are dated but the people we dealt with were very friendly. It was like going back to a simpler time when life moved at a slower pace. The location is great, right on the Gulf. I would go back and spend several days there.

First, I must say that the people at this hotel were very friendly, but........ This hotel is definately not worth the $150/per night rate they are charging. The rooms are old, dark and dingy and smelled musty. Because these rooms were so old they did not appear to be very clean. We had booked a two night stay, but left after one night and found another hotel.

We stayed here with our two young children and had a wonderful time. The room decor was old but clean and the view was beautiful. We had a little patio out back where we could set up our playpen for the baby in the shade and drop a fishing line with our preschooler off the seawall just a few feet away. The Lodge food was great and they would run it to your room very quickly. The owners and desk help were also great people, very friendly and helpful. This isn't the Hilton but is pleasantly funky and fun. We look forward to returning ASAP.

just got back from the lower keys, stayed at sugerloaf lodge. Yes the place is old, but clean.
The view from our room was blue to turquoise waters. The pool and the people there were tons of fun. The Tiki Bar, that was built by the owners son was a great time! we went to the lower keys 4th of july celebration at their air strip that was out of this world. It's real close to key west so ya have all that too. The owners of the lodge are hands on and real nice people. Mrs. Good (the owner) does alot of the landscapping. My small beagle dog was aloud anywhere on the property and was welcomed by the guests as well as the owners. They have a great marina it was one of the best vacations I'v ever had . I will definately stay there again. Oh, lets not forget their great resturant and service with a smile. Even their chamber maids were friendly and personable.

This is where my mother stays when she visits us (we live here - small condo). She loves the Sugarloaf Lodge because of its older style. She says it reminds her of the trips she used to take to Florida in the 1960's. Her hotel rooms have always been clean yet worn and a little humid. There is no up-to-date features like internet or modern AC units.

The restaurant is also an older style "lodge" type place and the food is average - but she knows what to expect and thinks its just perfect.

Her favorite thing about the Sugarloaf Lodge is by far the Tikki Bar. The bar is in the rear of the lodge. It is quiet and overlooks a gulfside bay. Watercraft rentals are available and pets are welcome. The staff are friendly and do not "push" or "upsell" anything.

If you want plush or modern accomodations this is not the place for you. If you don't mind accomodations still fashioned as they were in the 1970s & 1980s this is a great out-of-the-way place.

No matter if you choose to stay here or not. Do come up to the Tikki Bar on a Saturday or Sunday evening before sunset and enjoy and relaxing cocktail.

I would definitely agree with the previous posting about this hotel. The room was not very clean, the beds were very uncomfortable, our tv didn't have a remote, and the woman at the front desk was not very friendly. On top of all of this, it was way overpriced for what it was worth.
