Stayed at Sugarloaf Lodge early May 2013 with family, pulling up to Lodge you are thrown back into the 70's to early 80's, they actually have hard keys to the rooms. Upon entering, you are met with a 60's style themed room, beds were extremely nice and comfortable, view was terrific overlooking the Gulf. A/C system woked actually too well for my taste as I froze the first night and finally got it adjusted to a comfortable temperature for the rest of the stay. 20 minutes to Key West and 15 minutes to Bahia Honda beach.
Overall a different feel, but you get used to it after a few days, no complaints at all, prices much cheaper than Key West. I have been in the Hotel business for over 25 years with a major chain, so I have my qualms when it comes to hotels
PS, Try Mangrove Mamas restaurant about 5 miles north of hotel on Route 1, excellent food for breakfast and dinner, and dont forget to ask for Bailey!!
