Sandcastle Resort at Lido Beach
Ranked #20 of 50 Hotels in Sarasota
Reviewed November 5, 2012

My wife, daughter and myself stayed at this hotel for 10 nights in October.
We found it to be a very clean hotel, reasonably priced, with friendly staff BUT most of all it was in a beautiful location.
The white sandy beach was fantastic. Clean, quiet, and picturesque.
When there was a bit of on-shore breeze we simply headed for the hotel pool which offered shelter, and a pool-bar!
Yes the hotel is a bit dated, but the prices and location make up for this.
We did not think that the food and drinks prices were particularly expensive.
I agree with other reviews that a sea view, and upper level room is better.
Also, the whole area of Lido Key and St Armands Circle, is friendly, welcoming, clean, calm, non-commercialised, and safe.
We found this place to be very relaxing.
I will return one day.

Room Tip: Choose a room with sea view, and the top floor of whichever block.

If your looking to relax on a beautiful whitesand beech looking out to crystal clear blue sea, then this is perfect!
We watched dolphins feeding and playing while sat basking the the 29 degree october sunshine!
The hotel foods ok alittle pricey for what it is. We often had our main meal out at the armands circle where theres a wider choice.
The stretchs of beech along this coast are unbeatable.

Although it is slightly outdated, the hotel was very clean and right on beach. Unfortunately I had a fall .The staff was very concerned and were willing to take me to the doctor or hospital if needed. Since my friend and I are both nurses, we felt we could handle the situation. The hotel supplied me with bandages, dressings and antibiotic ointment. The meals were very good, since going somewhere else would have been difficult for me.

This was our second visit to the hotel. This time we stayed for 6 nights and we really enjoyed ourselves.

We paid more for a Gulf View room and it was lovely to have a balcony to sit out on and watch the sunrise/sunsets and we loved being right on the beach.

The hotel is slightly dated but spotlessly clean. It is the only hotel we have ever stayed in where my husband was able to wear his white socks in the room and they stayed white!!! Our room was a good size with two beds, seating area, fridge, a large walk in closet with a safe, small bathroom with a shower only and another large area just outside that with another sink.

The hotel has two pools and a very large pool deck with plenty of loungers. Pool towels are provided and there is always a good supply. There is a Tiki Bar which serves food and a restaurant that we ate in a few times and found the food to be very good... if a little pricey. There is a small shop and a laundry/games room. Breakfasts are good and when there are over 100 rooms in use at the hotel, they put on a buffett breakfast which is good value for money. At 4.00 pm every day they put out some free food by the Tiki Bar, which is a nice touch.

Overall the Helmsley is a very good hotel and one we would recommend to others without hesitation.

Room Tip: If you want a fantastic view, chose a Gulf View room.

Stayed here for 6 nights as a family of three. We paid extra for a sea view approx £50 per night - well worth it. Large room with two double beds, table chairs, small sofa. Small but adequate bathroom, a little worn. All spotless. The car park iis a little unsightly and some areas of the hotel are dated but many other factors mean that those points become insignificant. The staff are so friendly as to be honest were other residents at the hotel most of whom were there as repeat customers and its easy to understand why.
Armand Circle is a short drive or a 15/20 min walk away - we ate at the Circle most nights and enjoyed the variety of shops and the warm and friendly staff in the shops. We felt very safe in this area, there is a real island feel as opposed to Sarasota over the bridge which is a large city.
Canapés by the pool at 4pm a lovely touch.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the sea view

i booked this room and was considering changing because the bad reviews.. we paid 116 a night for a no view room... we arrived and were on the 3rd floor. we were right off the parking ramp and made it a breeze to bring things in. the room was nice. my only complaint was that the door has a horrible seal and you can see light around it. they had a parking attendent on the busy days to make sure no outsiders were there.. they gave some friends a temp parking pass.. the beach was amazing and we could actully see it from over the parking garrage in our room.. the chairs were free on the beach and they had a attendent to get them for you. i wish they had a microwave and a hot tub but other than that it was great. its a older hotel but for the price its great. sarasota is not a cheap town. the only noise we ever heard was from a few bratty kids whoes parents wouldnt tell them to hush up that people are sleeping.. but thats a lack of parenting skills not the hotels fault.
