“Pleasantly Surprised-Great Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2010

We stayed here over the busy Easter Break week. The hotel was full most of the nights we stayed here. I was concerned over some of the reviews I had read, but I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived. I found the staff slightly stressed over the number of people in line when we checked in, but overall very nice.
Our room was on the 4th floor overlooking the bay side and it was very clean. The carpet and bedding is great and while the furniture is slightly dated, it had a very "Florida" feel. The beds were very comfortable, excellent linens, 4 great pillows stacked on each bed, and we had great sleeps. (The beds actually reminded me of the "heavenly beds" at other hotels.) There was a big flat screen TV with cable and an outdoor porch, which is great. The bathroom was small, but very clean.
We had to call for service one night because our porch door lock was not working and they came promptly to fix it. Another guest mentioned parking was bad for an SUV, I disagree, we have an SUV never had any problem parking or finding a spot, and the hotel was full.
While the area to sit around the pool is small, there are plently of chairs, a nice little bar to order from and the pool itself was great. My kids enjoyed swimming there after a day in the salt water.
Just across the road is access to the beautiful beach. It's a smaller street, so not an issue at all. We have children 8 and 10 so I crossed with them, but considering it was the busiest week, it was no problem and I don't see it as an issue. The beach is beautiful, full of shells to pick and miles to walk.
There were not always enough chairs and umbrellas for all guests, but I imagine it's hard to stock up for Easter week. They provide towels which is a huge plus. Just bring an old flat sheet to lay down and use the towels, it works great.
The best part is the ability to walk to St. Armands Circle. It's about 3 blocks (4 min.) and you have great shopping, restaurants and ice cream! We walked there multiple times everyday.
Again, I was very pleased with our stay and I would stay there again next year. Unless you expect a 5 star hotel at 5 star prices, you will not be disappointed. This is a very nice mid-range hotel.

I cannot say many positive things about this hotel. The staff is lacking in the customer service department; don't expect anything more than a one word answer or response from them. Expect your room key to deactivate itself several times a day...and then have the pleasure of dealing with the ladies at the front desk. If you want a beach chair, get one early and make sure it's not broken; when you ask for a different one minutes later, they suddenly have none. The hotel is in need of an update and is one of the older feeling Holiday Inns I've been in. The beach is right across the street and is fairly clean; however there is not an easy way to get there. You can try to scale the 2 foot high wall of sand and shrubs or walk a block down the street where there's an entrance. Don't rent or bring an SUV since the parking lot is tight; parking will be a nightmare. The best part was St. Armands Circle being within walking distance and the beach not being overly full of people.

Thank you for your insight regarding your recent stay with our hotel. I am disappointed that you did not have a more pleasant experience with our staff and our facility. We face challenges over busy periods, and regardless, expect our staff to always offer the highest service. My apologies that we did not meet all of your expectations.

The location is wonderful for beach access and a short walk to the small town. However the hotel is run down and feels kind of grubby! The bathrooms were horrible, very old and dirty.
The reception staff were grumpy and made you feel like you were bothering them if you asked the simplest question.
This could be a great hotel if it was updated, cleaned and the staff were trained in customer service.

So what do you do when you have a hotel that gives you perfect access to the beach, pool and restaurants but offers less than good service in all departments? It's a tough choice!

Overall, this property is pretty old and the way is is maintained works for it. It offers very basic amenities and services.

The beds are good but the bathrooms are so in need of upgrades. The tub/shower floor felt soft in certain spots and the layout is tight and small. Was there for 2 nights - stayed in a standard room facing the beach (bonus to be able to hear the ocean every morning). Nothing fancy to report.

The air con in the room is a rather loud unit that sometimes drowns out all other noises (good if you can sleep with white noise but not so good if you want to hear the ocean as well).

The frontdesk staff are helpful to a point. They seem to want to terminate discussions/questions as quickly as possible. They don't appear interested in follow up questions or if there is anything else that is needed. If calling down, expect the conversations to be terminated after your first (and hopefully only) questions is posed.

The pool was great and comfortable; if not big enough for the crowds that sometimes want access to it. There is a lot of free parking but nothing else.

This is a basic older property with very little in terms of service.

My wife and I just enjoyed a great stay at the HI. Positives were: 1) location is great - beach is right across a small street and short walk to St. Armand's for shopping, food, etc. so no need to get in the car, 2) hotel is very well kept - neat and clean, 3) we had a great view of the Gulf - very large room with king bed - perfect for our 6 night stay, 4) hotel staff was outstanding - from the front desk team to the lounge to the housekeeping staff - everyone goes out of their way to be freindly and helpful. A few negatives: 1) lounge bar prices were high - $8 for an after dinner drink is very steep - also need to play up happy hour - didn't know there was one?, 2) rooms need more electrical outlets - with laptops, BBs and MP3s to charge, we ran out of plugs, 3) pool area, although decent, was a bit small and there is no hottub, 4) free wi-fi was not very reliable - we experienced a few outages during our stay.

In summary - we were very impressed and will be back - it's obvious here that the customer is #1 - well done!

This is a nice, beachfront hotel in a great location just minutes walk from the shops and restaurants in St Armand's Circle. However, this is no getting away from the fact that it's a fairly ugly concrete building from the outside. Inside, however, it has been refurbished, though our bathroom still looked rather dated compared to the rest of the room.

Initially I was disappointed to be allocated a gulf view room at the end of the floor. They are clearly much smaller than other rooms on each floor but reception informed me that they had no other room available after checking in at 6pm having booked and prepaid several months in advance. Looking on the positive side, with these rooms you only have neighbours on one side and the balcony view is more open on one side too. Fine as were only staying two nights but I couldn't help feeling that the end rooms should be advertised as such and sold at a lower rate.

Staff at reception were pleasant and we received drinks coupons on check-in as a welcome for being a HI Priority Club member, which was a nice touch. On our first evening, after a long drive, we decided to eat at the hotel's Sandollar restaurant on the top floor. The food was very good and was excellent value for money but the place was empty so had no atmosphere which was a shame.

I enjoyed the short stay at the hotel but I thought it was expensive for what we got compared to similar hotels. You are paying for the location, right on the beach, and the views from the rooms, which can't be beaten.

great locstion and spectacular view of Gulff Mexico. older hotel as noted with the old bathrooms but updated bedroom. Chris at bar was fun and Jodie @front desk was a bright spot . Bar could use some freshening up and maybe a happy hour?? five to eight dollars for a drink is kind of steep in a hotel bar. Hotel is immaculate and bright and very accessible to a beautiful, clean, quiet beach. Close to Armands circle and minutes to main highways to atttactions and restaurants and airport. Nice time but crummy weather.
