“Great tropical hotel in Sarasota !”
Reviewed February 3, 2012

We stayed for 2 nights at this wonderful hotel. The hotel staff were cheerful and friendly. Our room was very clean. We had a 10th floor room w a balcony overlooking the marina. The lovely bar and dining room areas had a value packed wine and flatbreads happy hour. The hotel provided shuttle service to the downtown and beach areas (complimentary). The climate and location made our experience tropical like in the midst of the city.

Overall, this hotel really delivers on design, service and quality.

First the good:

The hotel is very well designed, in a Florida style. It may not be to everyone's taste but most people I spoke with seemed to really like it. Bright, pastel colors and lots of neat little design elements that make the Hyatt superior to other hotels in the area. The lobby, halls and rooms were VERY clean which is also a good thing. Our room was literally spotless.

The food in the sit down restaurant and at the pool was above average, and very reasonably priced. The prix-fixe dinner options were really good - the short ribs are excellent - and the wine list, although not extensive, was very well priced. And if you don't like the food, it's a 10 minute cab ride (about $15) to St. Armand's Circle where there are dozens of great restaurants (we especially liked Columbia & Crab & Fin).

The lobby bar was nice and the staff were extremely friendly - in fact, all of the staff was very friendly and when asked anything, seemed eager to help. The girls at the front desk were especially helpful. They have a happy hour starting at 4 PM which was fun.

The pool area is nice, and has a waterfall feature, but to be honest, it's nothing spectacular. It overlooks in little marina which is pleasant. The service was a bit spotty but the server had all of the pool guests to deal with so it really wasn't a big deal. If you don't want to be moving all day in the loungers, make sure you pick a spot that will not be blocked by palm trees. We ended up having to move 4 times as the sun shifted!

Now, the "bad":

I agree with other reviewers that they could fix the room reservation system to deliver the room that you had reserved. We too had reserved a king size bed but upon arrival were offered two doubles. We also had reserved a marina facing balcony room which also wasn't available, however, we liked the extra space in the room (which holds a small couch) where the balcony would have been. The non-marina view is NOT great so be forewarned - although depending on how high you are, you can see water. Ask for a higher floor if you're on that side of the hotel.

Overall, I can't give the Hyatt an "excellent" rating but it fell just short.

Room Tip: The balconies are REALLY small, so unless you want the fresh air, go for the rooms with the glassed...

Very average hotel. The room was quite basic with a small balcony you could not really use which overlooked the boat marina. The food in the hotel was really expensive and buffet style which was always quite cold. We ate out each night at St Armands Circle. Can recommend the Columbia restaurant. Great food with a cuban ambiance, a place where you can sit out and watch most of the woman who are quite obvious plastic surgery fiends with the same fake bleach blond hair extensions, fake tan, are 50-60 years old yet dressed like teenagers, push their food around their plates whilst admiring themselves in the glass windows. Quite fully to watch. Worth a go.

We had reserved a king size bed but when we arrived they said they only had one room left and it had two double beds. Okay - no big deal. However, it was a handicap room - no tub, just a lip on the floor to keep the water in the shower (which it dfidn't) with a shower curtain. My husband proceeded to take a show and water went everywhere - even into the carpeted bedroom. A real mess.

HOWEVER - next morning the young lady at the front desk apologized profusely and promised to give us the first clean empty room - which occurred immediately. Bellman moved our bags, again apologized profusely offered to fetch ice, etc. They went overboard to make things right. That's why I'm still givinig them five stars. Stuff happens.

Location is great - Sarasota has a designated trail just across the street and it's a lovely walk along the water.

Be sure to check out the Currents Restaurants - never like hotel restaurants very much but their food is very good. I especially recommend the fish tacos - just wonderful.

The hotel is really neat, and reflects the culture of FL. with the bright color scheme they have throughout. The lobby and restaurant is super clean, and the use of clear glass for railings and stub walls is very unique. The room was clean and a hair dryer is included in the room, along with an iron and board. The staff was very friendly also. I would definitely stay here again! Also, this hotel is walking distance to downtown Sarasota, which is very cute. There is a grocery store nearby too if you dont want

Room Tip: Downstairs business center next to the lobby has 4 computers with free internet if you don't wan...

Travelled down to Florida for work. I have travelled here multiple times for work and have stayed at three different hotels now (Hotel Indigo and Hampton Inn Airport). This and the Indigo are both hotels that I would stay at again.

We arrived later in the evning and a gentlemen I was travelling with had some minor issues at check-in. My room was fine but the other guy was put basically inside the elevator shaft!! He was given a different room, charged the price for the orignal room, but the staff removed it once brought to their attention.

Back to my stay...my room was clean and had a GREAT view of the bay. The room is nothing special, just your typical hotel room. But it was clean and the toothepaste was a nice touch.

The front desk is very helpful with directions and suggestions. I liked the fact that they had a running path mapped out and how towels and water ready for you when you come back. The pool looked very nice (didn't have time to use) but it is sitting right on the marina/bay. The Hyatt is located near the main drag so reastraunts are easy to fine.

My only complaint would be the hotel reastraunt. It is very expensive for a hotel eatery. We arrived late and wanted to grab a quick, easy bite for dinner. We had to go down the street to the Ritz for a quick bite (hard to believe huh?).

All in all, nice hotel. if you are looking for the top notch luxury hotel, the Riz is def. the way to go. But the Hyatt def. holds it own and for the price, is prob. a great value.
