Our family met with Jess at Bird Key Park and got quick lessons on how to do stand-up paddleboarding. I was nervous because I'm not a strong swimmer but the rest of our party are all very strong swimmers/lifeguards. Jess has us strap little emergency inflatable vests that look like fannypacks and we paddled across the bay in sort-of choppy water, so it was not easy-breezy but all the people in our party are physically fit so it was not an issue. The better you are at balancing, the easier it is. It's just like canoeing but standing up...not as easy as it looks but you catch on fast and then it's easy. Jess was very friendly and talked to us about the wildlife in the area. If your not used to paddling your arms may get really tired from paddling, but you will still have fun. It is am amazing feeling to stand in the middle of the bay and look at the land from the water!
There was a little bobble with our reservations--we arrived on time to our meeting location but Jess was not there, so we assumed we were in the wrong place and drove around calling the manager for better info, and it was hard to get ahold of anyone on the phone when we felt lost. However, we circled back to our original location and there he was but he had a good excuse for being late--some crazy driver apparently ran him off the road and tipped his surf boards off his trailer which he had to reload....this was just an incident that happened and not the fault of this company or us, so we were just glad no one was hurt. Because we got a 20-min late start, we got to get the 20 min on the other side of our reservation because Jess and the management made sure we got our full booking. That is good business and it was fun!
This is one of the best things we did during our stay in Florida and once was NOT enough! We are all determined to do this again, and hopefully with a guide as patient and knowledgeable as Jess. Thanks for a super day!
