This restaurant and gift shop is very friendly. The buffet had good variety and "homemade" and comfort foods. Good fresh veggies, mac and cheese, ham, bar-b-que, lots of meats, sides, salads. and desserts. Roomy dining room, family atmosphere. We asked for a back corner, so our 10-month-old grandson could play on his blanket on the floor.
There is a wonderful gift shop featuring Amish or Mennonite-made goods: wonderful quilts, jams, toys...even a second floor with more goodies.

My wife and I went here for the lunch after a morning at the beach. Our server was very friendly. The food on the buffet was fresh and looked delicious. I enjoyed everything I ate from the buffet. The fried chicken by far was my favorite, it was cooked to perfection. Nice and crispy on the outside and tender and moist on the inside.

First the salad bar is excellent. Crisp and cold chopped greens. Chilled plates. Lots of things to top it. Variety of salad dressings.

What everyone comes for is the broasted chicken. When it is good, it is excellent. When it sits too long in the serving line (like on this visit) it was dried out and chewy. Sometimes the mash potatoes are creamy and flavorful. Others like this trip thin and watery. Nice selection of vegetables but not particularly flavorful. Probably perfect for the clientele, seniors and families.

Well we always come back.

During our 1 week vacation at Siesta Key, FL we visited Der Dutchman twice for dinner. Next year we will definitely try breakfast. From the uber fresh salad stuffs to the home cooking veggies and entrees and finally the chocolate cake and ice cream finale, we were blown away. The chowder was great, the mustard eggs were a new tasty experience, the broasted chicken was juicy, the mashed potatoes perfect, the homemade noodles yummy, and roast beef was melt in your mouth good. In fact everything we tried we liked except the stuffing (texture was odd). Be sure you try the vanilla ice cream at the end with the chocolate cake. They have a peanut butter sauce on the tables, give it a try. You will probably find yourself buying the big bottle as you leave. It's great on toast for a quick breakfast on the go. The bakery sells fried pies 1.99 each. We tried 4 different flavors and weren't blown away but live to try some of the other treats next year. The restaurant was very clean and have private rooms for larger groups to dine together.

I almost forgot, they had a smoked sausage one evening when we were there that my husband and son raved over.

Of course the highlight of the buffet is the delicious broasted chicken, but all of the salads and other entrees are just as good. Pea salad, baby beets, etc. remind you of picnics at Grandma's house! The price is also very reasonable. Desserts are yummy and you can buy them in the adjacent store to take home. We used to go to a Der Dutchman in Plain City, Ohio and were thrilled to find this one in Sarasota. The restaurant is very large so you don't encounter the long waiting times that you do at the other Amish restaurant down the street.
