Description: Serving Sarasota for Over 25 years! The Old Salty Dog first opened its door for business in Siesta Key Village back on November 1st 1986. The owners original concept was to take a small popular village beer and hot dog stand and turn it into a casual Restaurant and Pub. They have mixed the best of the Florida Keys and their British heritage to create a fun family environment that is appealing to people from all walks of life. There are now 2 locations and they are patronized not only by their many regular local customers and characters but they also enjoy abundant new and repeat business from all over the United States and from around the World.

Went there because I read they were very dog friendly. Got seated and put my 8 pound dog on my lap. Hostess came over immediately and in a not so friendly tone said that dogs had to be kept on the ground and that the staff are not permitted to touch them and that I should wash my hands after touching my dog. Should of got up and left then. Food was expensive for the quality. Drinks were good but also expensive, $10.50 for a rum punch. Waitress was good.

Always dependable seafood and casual dining fare. Great views by the dockside. Get a TShirt while you are there.

Stopped here for a late lunch and some cocktails. Sat out on the deck and had a good view of the marina and the bay. Pelicans were hanging out on some water signs pretty close which was cool. Cocktails were good. But the peel n eat shrimp were fantastic! Served in a mildly spicy broth that was super flavorful. Really enjoyable. Would return.

Sorry for a negative review but our experience was, shall I say “less than stellar”.

While staying on Longboat Key on August 12 we did an online Google search for seafood restaurants in the area. Old Salty Dog came in at number “4”. That sounded pretty good.

Location is pleasant, on the water. Probably a good hangout for beer drinking locals under 40.

Service was acceptable. Not the server’s fault that the meal was humble; at best.

I ordered fish and chips. It was served as a breaded, deep fried fillet over a bed of fries. The fries were nothing special, not great, not bad. The breading on the fillet was crisp on the outside and almost raw on the inside, like the inside of an undercooked pancake. A great laxative. The fish portion was generous and would possibly have been great grilled or broiled.

My wife had a grilled grouper sandwich. The fish was a bit tough, I believe due to over cooking. The sandwich was served with what the restaurant represented as coleslaw. It was as if the “chef” took a bag of commercial shredded lettuce, cabbage and carrots from a bag, put a handful into a dish and shook some tasteless seasoning over it before sending it out to the diner. Mediocre would be an overstatement of quality.

How the rating of “4” as a seafood destination in the area has been achieved is a complete mystery to me and to my wife. The food just wasn’t good.
