“Intolerable Noise Levels”
Reviewed February 19, 2014

This is a very unfortunate situation. This restaurant has both excellent food and outstanding service. However, whoever designed this mess, placed the very large bar area in the middle of the restaurant, with dining tables on either side. It is a busy bar and, as one would expect, it gets extremely noisy around dinner time. Given the placement of the bar, none of the dining tables are very far from the bar area, making it impossible to find anything remotely approaching a quiet venue.

On our second visit, we tried to solve this problem by using their outdoor terrace. Same Problem! The "genius" who designed the restaurant decided it would be fun to intersperse dining tables with low seating designed for cocktails. The result - Intolerable noise levels at all the dining tables.

It is not possible to carry on a conversation in a normal voice level at any table in this restaurant. This was particularly evident on our second visit when we had guests. We actually moved to get away from a particularly loud party of drinkers. It did not solve the problem.

Unless enjoy eating in noise levels that are similar to those found in sports bars, I would avoid this restaurant at dinner.

I would, however, note that this is a very good choice for either breakfast or lunch.

“Some hits and some misses.”
Reviewed February 15, 2014

Had dinner for the first time at Jack Dusty on Valentines Day. Some of our favorites were already booked, so we thought, why not. We live in the area, but ... have heard mixed reviews so we didn't rush to try it. We liked the old restaurant, and understood the Ritz was hoping to attract more locals. We don't really feel like this is an improvement over the former restaurant. The older one was elegant and comfortable, though a bit stuffy and priced typically for a Ritz location. This one seems more like a bar than a restaurant, and not many comfortable tables. We sat outside and were fortunate to have a heater beside us as it was a chilly evening. There were really not a large number of normal dining tables inside, more of the restaurant had seating that would be typical for a bar or lounge.
The prices on the menu were still high, but the food didn't really warrant the prices.
Hot bread in a can, ok, but ... not impressive. Tomato and buratta salad was not the best I have had and I order this pretty much every time I see it on a menu. A salad of tomatoes and watermellon was different, but just ok. Crab cakes ... a little odd, not like anything we have had before. Not great and not bad. Scallop special was good. Scallops were cooked perfectly, but ... 3 for $30??? Not really worth the price. Cocktails were good.
We didn't really see anything on the menu that would draw us back. There are lots of places in town with great food and some with better views. If we are going to pay Ritz prices, we expect to be wowed both with the ambiance and the food which didn't happen for us.

“Great cocktails”
Reviewed January 28, 2014

We decided to stop in for some cocktails on our visit to Sarasota. Unique drinks and very well done -- no skimping on the alcohol. Very good service and it was nice to sit outside by the pool and marina.

“Renovated Restaurant Not Ritz Quality”
Reviewed January 17, 2014

We recently stayed at one of our favorite hotels, The Ritz Carlton in Sarasota, Florida. We last stayed there three or four years ago and the "Ritz Experience" was fantastic as usual. This stay was also great with a fast and friendly check in, a very nice upgrade and a superb room. This hotel is tops in every way except with their renovated restaurant in the hotel. In the past it had been warm and inviting with a fantastic bar/lounge, main lounge and a quality restaurant with warm and inviting décor.

Well the Jack Dusty (name of the new restaurant) is a complete makeover but fails the test of Ritz quality in my opinion. The décor is very stark and modern inside with a featured raw bar, coffee bar and tables/couches sprinkled around inside. While we did not have dinner there, we did have breakfast and lunch. Breakfast was a pretty standard menu with some interesting items however I ordered my standard eggs, over easy with ham. Eggs came but if they were over easy, they were barely "over". No problem with sending them back and the retry was fine. By the way, their coffee is excellent. My wife had scrambled and she had no issue with the preparation. Had lunch on the next day with a guest and that was a real let down. I selected fried oysters with fries and I have to say they were probably the worst fried oysters I have ever tried to eat. The oysters did have a batter on them but it was soggy with oil, almost like the oil was not hot enough to do the job. My wife had a chicken sandwich with avocado on French roll. The chicken was dry and over cooked so not a good choice either. I do not know what they offer for dinner and I don't know if they put table cloths on their tables for dinner or not, but quite frankly the renovation in both physical design, menu and quality of food preparation leaves much to be desired for this fine hotel. Definitely not up to Ritz Quality.
