“Wanted to love this place, but the food disappoints.”
Reviewed February 16, 2013 via mobile

I was really very excited to love this place. I had read so many positive reviews (mostly on Yelp, but later found out The Ritz invited Yelpers to a private preview, so in my opinion those reviews are very slanted) and was ready to be wowed.
The space is very pretty. It is open, nicely decorated, with a beautiful bar.
We started with Mote caviar, and although they gave nice portions of it, the lemon creme fraiche was so overpowering the taste of the caviar was lost. I also had the tomato and burrata salad. It was not seasoned and came with no dressing. I liked the concept, but the flavors did not deliver.
Main courses were seafood gumbo that was thick and goopy with the smallest shrimp and scallops I've ever seen (this is supposed to be a seafood restaurant).
My husband had the catch of the day (grouper) simply grilled. It was way overcooked and dry. If you are supposed to be a seafood restaurant you better know how to cook a piece of fish.
I was very disappointed in this place!

“Well... wanted to really like this place”
Reviewed February 4, 2013

There is a lot of positives about this place: the location, the view, presumably the menu and the ambiance/atmosphere. In reality, here is how our experience went... We sat outside and it was freezing, but the fire pit and the lamps were a nice touch to keep you warm. The veranda/patio had a great overlook. Our server was not the most attentive, as a matter of fact, it always takes away from my experience when I feel like I am inconveniencing the server that is working there. Maybe he just had a crappy day, who knows. Anyhow, our service was sporadic, but we pretty much decided to brave it through, as the company and the conversation was good. We ended up getting some food, which was very good, but nothing you could not get at a seafood place elsewhere in Sarasota, for less money, probably. After a while and our struggles with the waiter, we decided to relocate inside, where we were offered a table for four, when we had 5 in the party. We decided to take it, had a drink or two and left. The crowd is very Cougar town like, as you would expect, so it definitely makes you feel like you are on a set for a reality show. Not really our scene, and the lack of service was definitely not a good touch. Lets also say valets have questionable policies and questionable manners.

“Successful Reincarnation with a Ridiculous Name”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

We read all of the nonsense about the origin of the name, but that only makes it more ridiculous. Once moving beyond that, the latest incarnation of the signature restaurant in Sarasota's Ritz Carlton is a winner. The ambiance is bright and creative as are the accouterments. The beautiful bar dominates the entrance and most of the room; while the double flat panel TVs might please the bar patrons, they are some annoyance to diners in the further reaches of the restaurant. Nevertheless, the total persona is stunning. Service is as professional and prompt as might be expected. Seafood predominates but one of our party devoured his steak. Gumbo was rich with deep flavors and our only disappointment was that the crab and shrimp boil for two was not available. Jack "whatever" is perfect for a special occasion when cost is not a concern.

“Jack Dusty Continental Cuisine and Hand-Crafted Cocktails Welcome Aboard!”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

Beautifully handsome men come bouncing to our car dressed in Black and White stipe cotton Tee-Shirts. Are we sure we are at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota? We stroll across the richly appointed lobby, and then enter another world as we step into the sea. It is truly a sea of breathtaking beauty; soothing and vibrant, hip, a melding of colors and flavors. The cocktails are masterpieces. We have entered the Jack Dusty.

Everywhere you look, your senses are challenged with a melding of colors and artifacts. Try to arrive early so that you can roam around and breathe in all of the décor throughout the restaurant. Also venture out onto the outside veranda to partake in the beauty of Sarasota.

We are seated in a semi-private glass enclosed room with a magnificent floor to ceiling white sand colored "Wave Wall" adorned with colorful sea-glass bubble chandeliers. No white tablecloths - a large parchment paper placemat along with an artfully knot tied napkin, silverware and colorful glassware.

We ordered their hand-crafted cocktails and the hand carved ice truly does make a difference. They were decadent! I had the Watermelon Salad with compressed tomatoes. Fresh. Amazingly different and tantalizingly good. We ordered Jack's Catch of the Day - Flounder stuffed with Crab - Phenomenal. Outstanding combination of flavors and textures. I swear that fish was in the sea only an hour before serving it was that fresh.

Trying to stay away from fried foods and sugar? Not tonight. You will have to indulge yourself with the fried Doughnut Holes with powdered sugar. Seriously worth it. The coffee was rich and smooth.

Welcome Aboard Jack Dusty. We will be back!
