“Great fun, but no farmers”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

We spend a couple of months in Sarasota every year and come to this market most Saturday mornings. Like most "farmers" markets, there are no real farmers. Except one guy, who has been there ever since farmers actually came to these things. He has the most beautiful lettuce I've ever seen, as well as herbs, starfruit, etc. Otherwise, the food vendors are selling exactly the same stuff you'll find at Publix, for about the same price, including tropical fruits like pineapples, bananas and mangoes. Often these things are even identified as to origin, i.e., Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, etc.

But there are really only a few food vendors. Most are selling homemade goods, flowers, massages, tai chi instruction, crafts, you name it. They really should come up with a more descriptive name, as farmers are not involved anymore.

Sarasotans are crazy about their dogs. Expect a parade, as this is their favorite place to show them off.

“A Locavore Paradise Saturday Morning”
Reviewed August 9, 2012

Far more than just a "Farmer's Market" (not that this would be a bad thing), a Saturday morning at the Sarasota Farmers Market is a diverse and consistently beautiful way to kick off a weekend! Don't even think about eating breakfast beforehand, as the range of foodie options is wonderful. The photo currently posted here is taken from the upstairs level of the Java Dawg coffee bus, which is a retrofitted double decker English bus that serves as a great starting place and meeting point for your morning. This is an all-year market experience, so you don't need to worry about seasonal availability. The market expands considerably in both vendor and crowd numbers during the cooler local growing season and tourist months, but even on a hot day in August (like last Saturday), there is everything from fruits and vegatables, to meats, seafood, baked goods, flowers, crafts, street artists, homeopathic remedies, etc. Having been to many such markets around the U.S. and globally, I highly recommend this one right here in my own back yard as one of the best out there.

“Farmers Market...and so much more”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

Just a few of our favorite things at the SFM -

Foccacia , excellent. Took it home and warmed it in the oven. Dipped it in olive oil with herbs. Made the best tomato sandwiches the next day. www.peperonatapasta.com

Gluten Free goodies for my daughter. Excellent cupcakes, pizza crusts, cookies. Thankfully they ship too. www.goodtobeglutenfree.com

Fudge, traditional and Vegan. My GF/Dairy free daughter could have fudge again! So creamy and good. A wide variety of flavors. Samples to try too. www.RichardsCandyCo.com

Real farmers, excellent produce.
Dogs are welcome!

Sarasota's Main Street has good shops and restaurants so hang out and shop around.

When you get hot grab a pop www.popcraftpops.com

A great way to spend your Saturday morning.
