There are lots of good places to eat Mexican food in Sarasota. What sets this restaurant apart -- in a good way -- are the excellent seafood dishes. My husband and I are snowbirds and since arriving in December, we've eaten here here about once a week. Despite our many visits, we rarely repeat what we've ordered. Between the daily specials and the many appealing options on the regular menu, we haven't wanted to.

We've particularly enjoyed:
Mariscada Azteca (a Mexican version of cioppino/bouillabaisse)
Fish in Veracruz sauce (a bright and tangy lemon-caper sauce)
Fish topped with Shrimp & Calamari rings in Garlic Sauce
(There's a mound of rice on the side to absorb all that wonderful sauce)
Shrimp/Calamari/Oyster cocktail (Mexican spelling: coctel -- The small size "chico" is enough!);
(This is a cross between a mixed seafood cocktail and a ceviche)
Shrimp Fajitas and Shrimp Tacos
Shrimp Ranchero (There's a spicier version called "a la Diabla". My husband wanted spicy but
not "Diabla-spicy" The chef met his request spot on by upping the spice of the house-
made Ranchera sauce.)

In the non-fish/seafood area, we've enjoyed...
Cochinita Pibil (Marinated and roasted pork that is served in large chunks)

Finally, the flan is one of the best flans we've ever had. The caramelized sugar syrup is browned enough to provide a good contrast to the excellent creamy custard.

The wait staff is family and customers are welcomed like friends of the family. The pride in the family business is obvious

Someone we know muttered darkly about the version of the restaurant that used to exist on Main Street. I don't know anything about what might have existed in the past. All I know is that today Mariscos Azteca serves perfectly cooked, impeccably fresh seafood along with the classics of Mexican restaurants. The reasonable prices -- especially for seafood -- and large portions make this a very accessible and appropriate restaurant for everyone.

This is a small (12 table) restaurant in a mall, nice Mexican decor, good service, reasonable prices. We had the mariscada seafood and garlic shrimp, both delicious tasting. We will retur there.

Relocated from downtown's Main St. to a strip mall, Azteca (now "Mariscos Azteca") has lost not a tingle of taste. The home-style comfort food remains authentic, the tortillas piping hot, the decor unassuming and hostess/manager Mariela's congenial attitude lights up the modestly furnished dining area as brightly as ever. It's a worthwhile hike to enjoy the harvests from surf and turf, nicely seasoned and served with much simpatía. One minor drawback: no liquor license, beer and wine only and margaritas made with 20% (40 proof) tequila.

Wish they were still on Main St. but we understand why that might be an expensive to maintain location. I think their new location has probably hurt their business as they were not busy when we visited. We are seasoned mexican restaurant visitors in many locations around US, Mexico and others and we found the food to be fresh and very good particularly for Florida. Service is absolutely great. The margaritas were made with Agave wine and ok but not great. The Mole sauce and Tomatillo sauce were good. The chicken (Mole) enchilada was very moist and tender. Heard no complaints from others in our party.

Mariella is awesome owner and waitress!
4th time for lunch, and every time in town I come here.
Authentic, great food and value. This is the kind of place that you tell others about.
