My 16 year old son who has type 1 diabetes went to see Divergent this afternoon at Lakewood Ranch Cinemas in Bradenton. He was with a group of other students of similar age most of whom were girls with purses. My son has a leather bag which he uses to carry his diabetic testing supplies and emergency snacks. If you are unfamiliar, diabetics need to have specifically measured snacks with them at all times in case their blood sugar goes low. When that happens a life threatening situation occurs.
After purchasing his ticket and attempting to enter the movie he was singled out to inspect his bag. No other people in his group were asked to inspect their bags. He was told he would not be able to bring his bag into the theater because it contained food which was prohibited. He was allowed to bring his testing equipment. He had no choice but to purchase an apple juice to ensure he had a safety net if his blood sugar went low during the movie. William the manager on duty was belligerent and uncooperative. His comment was any food you require can be purchased. The most amazing comment William made was "if you have a problem with our policies the you can leave." This was to my 16 year old son!
Lakewood Main Street Ranch has hosted multiple diabetes fundraisers not only this morning but also the Tour de Cure ride a few weeks back which my son and I rode in. It's incredibly sad to see this level of insensitivity to diabetics by a business who benefits from those events and in particular toward a 16 year old.
ALL diabetics need to boycott Lakewood Ranch Cinemas until they (1) issue and apology (2) reprimand William the manger on duty (3) modify their policy to allow a diabetic to carry a potentially life saving snack. (3) modify their policy to allow a diabetics to carry a potentially life saving snack.
