“Fabulous, unique dinner”
Reviewed December 8, 2012

WOW. This place rules. We are from LA and used to 5 star restaurants, however this place still impressed us! The food is very different, but in a good way. Fish was top quality. Short ribs were the best we've ever had. Definitely a great atmosphere for a date night or dinner with friends. Wine by the bottle was also superb. 4 of us ate very well here for $200 total... cant beat that!

“Best Peruvian in Town”
Reviewed December 8, 2012

We have dined at Darwin's on 4th several times now, and the food and service have been consistently very good! The short ribs are especially good, and you can't beat their early dining (at the bar) specials. They brew their own beer and have many, many from which to choose.

“Going downhill”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

We are locals in Sarasota and have frequented Darwins regularly. Unfortunately, it is going downhill and shouldn't really be recommended anymore to visitors to our city. We have many excellent restaurants, and if your time is limited, skip this one.

Our last (and I do mean last) meal at Darwin's was quite poor. The Jalea Andina is billed as a crispy mix of octopus, shrimp and fish with interesting side salads, and my husband had ordered it before. This time, it was basically stack of generic chunks of fried fish and a few shrimp.

When we explained the situation to the waiter, he looked at the dish and said he would certainly mention it to the chef. Perhaps he did, but we never heard about it. We received neither an explanation, an offer for a different entry, an apology, or even a further acknowledgement of a problem from anyone. We ordered coffee, paid our substantial bill, and eventually departed. When a restaurant get to that point from a management standpoint, things aren't going to get better.

Save your money, go to one of the many other very fine restaurants our area has to offer.

“A Genuine Culinary Experience”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

We loved the chef's Peruvian/Andean-inspired menu. My husband had a pisco sour with his ceviche -- served with Andean corn and dried corn -- for his starter. I had little crab cakes served on a timbale of purple mashed potatoes. Both plated beautifully. Our entrees were a shrimp and mussel stew and a stuffed cornish hen with grilled brussel sprouts. Don't worry -- there's plenty of very traditional American food as well. We did not have dessert, but they looked glorious. The dining room is a bit loud (and the bar area has live music, but you can eat there, too if you like), but the noise did not interfere with our conversation. This restaurant has an open kitchen so you can see how very professional (and clean) it is. This is probably the best restaurant in Sarasota. Only concern: the staff appears to become overwhelmed at times and not everyone is working in the most efficient manner. Our waiter was terrific, but there seemed to be some confusion between the waiters and the front of the house.

“Worth the $$$”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

My husband and I visited here on our last night in Sarasota based on many great reviews from our foodie family. I love South American food and flavors and Darwin's did not disappoint. Atmosphere is great, service was very friendly and helpful. Nice wine and drinks selection. Ceviche was outstanding - very fresh. One of the best skirt steaks I've ever had. Plantains were done to perfection and my husbands tuna was cooked perfectly and was a very nice size portion. We ordered a side of the tostones and they were also perfect- My only wish is that we had gone with more people so we could have tried more of the small plates and ceviches as there were so many to choose from! It's not cheap but worth it. Can't wait to return on our next trip down to SRQ!
