“Perfect evening”

Went out last Saturday and had the 1 pound lobster tail. Fantastic. My wife had the koi steak prepared to perfection. Atmosphere was terrific. Will return

“Best Restaurant in Sarasota”
Reviewed January 29, 2012

I don't know what could have happened between the previous review and our visit but it is as though we are speaking about different restaurants. Our friends shared a number of dishes with us and each bite brought sounds of pleasure from everyone. The tuna tartare appetizer, which I have had at a 1/2 dozen restaurants in Sarasota, exceeded expectations. The ostrich carpaccio was exquisitely delicate and delicious, the lamb with couscous combined the often stringent mediterranean spices more expertly than any restaurant in Sarasota claiming a mediterranean heritage. Finding the combination of high quality catch, perfected flavor and texture in fish in Sarasota is not easy when you expect Le Bernardin level preparation, but Maximo's nailed it. Where do you get all this and a space that is itself a conversation piece, elegant but lively, historical and energetic at the same time....and by the way, great music was playing....

“Uh-oh. No go.”
Reviewed January 9, 2012

We went to Maximo's one week after their "soft opening," which the server described as a takeover without fanfare. The first floor is a lovely room, which was empty, but for some reason we were taken up an outside staircase to the second floor, then down a long hallway to a room with a large bar and dining tables. The room has beautiful wood work. No music was piped in--the only one who knew how to use the sound system was the owner, who had not shown up yet (it was about 7:15)--so the bartender was singing snippets of Frank Sinatra. He had a nice voice, but really . . . We started with appetizers--rubbery, tasteless calamari and fried shrimp, which was awful. Later, when we gave our opinion to the owner, who finally came in and turned on the music, he said, "Yeah, well, I've had complaints about the calamari." Dude, why keep it on the menu?! The other appetizer was a spicy shrimp sauteed in butter and garlic, which was very good. The waiter described the restaurant as "Italian with South African flavor" (huh?), and my companion tried the buffalo steak. They also have antelope on the menu. His first bite was nothing but fat, and he had to spit it out. The second bite, same thing. The third bite was gristle, so he sent the plate back and ordered grilled prawns (more shrimp!) because nothing else on the menu appealed to him. There was nothing distinguished about the plate. I had snapper with a thick, gloppy sauce with julienne cabbage. No, thank you, no dessert--let's get out of here! The server presented the bill ($100+) and said the buffalo had been taken off the bill. Well, duh! Had it been left on, I would have gone ballistic. A new restaurant probably should have given us the prawn dinner on the house. The owner finally came over when my companion caught his eye. He apologized for the buffalo steak and said to call him the next time we come in. Like there will be a next time. There are too many good restaurants downtown to go to Maximo's again.
