The mansion and grounds were very beautiful and enjoyed the few rooms that I saw, but was disappointed to find out that in order to see the rest of the house, you had to pay an additional fee, which was a bit pricey.

Ca d'Zan means "House of John" however, Mrs. Ringling was the one who worked with the architect. She carried her most prized and loved things with her to the architect to encorporate the details. She picked out everything so much so that the architect put on the blueprints "Mrs. Ringling's Home". She only lived in her beloved home for 3 winters until she died of Addison's disease with complications from Diabetes. John almost lost the home before his death due to bad financial decisions. His final triumph was giving the land and the home to the state of Florida. The home itself is decorated the way you would expect the circus czar to live. The home is large for just 2 people and their many pets (dogs and birds) but they entertained many. The house consist of a game room, formal dining room, breakfast room and kitchen with 8 bedrooms. You can tour the bedrooms for an additional fee during a scheduled tour. The outside has a tiled wrap porch with rocking chairs and umbrellas. What a view they had. Every ceiling in the house is decorated differently so look up. Also, in the living room is a large chandelier that was from the original Waldorf Astoria. Very beautiful.

Wow - what an lovely mansion (built in the Venetian/Italian style). Make sure to allow time to sit on the back veranda set on the bay to enjoy the view and rest before heading onward to other activities or start here and wait for the next tour to start (which is what we did). I especially loved some of the unusual furniture and the venetian building details. Tours are self-guided downstairs and you can also pay for a guided tour which includes the upstairs as well (ck w/ticket counter for specifics on times, etc.). Loved the chandalier from the original Astoria hotel in NYC, too!

The grounds leading up to the house are amazing. There is the beautiful Mable Ringling Rose Garden, the fascinating and magical banyan trees, the Secret Garden and the graves of Mr. & Mrs. Ringling behind the Secret Garden.

There are free golf carts to take you to the other buildings/sites on the property if you're not up for the return walk. We walked to the mansion and did everything on the property and then took the golf cart over to the art museum... which I recommend you take a golf cart at least one-way as the drivers fill you in on details we didn't know any other way, like the height of the flag poles (which represent the big top main poles) and why they needed to be shorter than they'd have been if they held the big top tent (interesting info).

So glad we came!

Very unusual home, but well worth the time to tour. Nice grounds and a great place to unwind next to bay. Take your time, you'll be surprised at the detail in this home

Nice easy self-tour. Beautiful spot on the water. A tour with a guide can also be arranged. Seeing the rose garden, also on the grounds of this mansion and the museums was lovely.
