Which is next door to Lan, kind of like a bar option with the same owner? But anyhow, it was a late night, the service was great and very personal and friendly from our bartender. We got some good beer and wine advice and had a great time. One of the booths kind of smelled a little, but hopefully, it will be fixed next time we return, because we will...

Back this week after a number of visits, Lan's impresses more each time. From the amuse bouche through to dessert, the imaginative, unconventional and tasteful servings do not disappoint. Always evolving, the the menu offers tradiitional items done handsomely in both presentation and taste. My wife started with a crab cake floating in ginger soup, and an entree of halibut stuffed with shrimp and crab. I started with rare tuna and watermelon slices on tortilla-like chips with a savory sauce, and an entree of rare duck breast, risotto and bok choy. After many experiences here and abroad, perhaps the best duck breast preparation ever,
Delicious, and a relaxing, tastefully minimal setting.

Last year we raved about Lan: see my review as "Lucullus"- January 14, 2011. Returning a year later, we were wary. Restaurants so dependent on one chef and with menus so demanding as here often decline. Not at Lan. The chef is cooking better than ever--showing a greater command of sauces and spices, offering a wider variety of dishes, choosing more appropriate wine pairings, The cuisine is still as creative and eclectic as ever. (And the Trip Advisor still misleadingly calls it "Asian,")

We made five visits this year, twice with friends, each time ordering the tasting menu (known as the "chef's tour.") That is definitely the best, perhaps the only, way to fully appreciate Lan's talent. Perhaps the most spectacular was the 10-course Valentine Day menu. Examples (some of which are on the regular menu): Ginger Crab Soup with crab cakes and tarragon mustard aioli; seared foie gras with fried risotto, riesling reduction, poached pear; lobster tail, pappardelle with cognac and tangerine sauce, and broccolini; duck breast with bing cherry sauce, wild rice with dried currant and hazelnuts; filet mignonwith pomegranate demi glace, potatoes dauphinoise, baby zucchini. Be sure to try the soup, whatever it happens to be. Lan is also her own pastry chef, creating such delights as her flourless chocolate torte with bing cherries, and amaretto ice cream. The wine list is moderately priced (as is the food), and well chosen (though not as exciting as the food or as deep as at (say) Michael's or Salute.

We've now eaten multiple times at all of what the local foodies tell us are the top Sarasota restaurants. None turn out dishes that show such a high level of creativity matched with a pitch perfect sense of flavor combinations as we find here.

Why isn't the restaurant crowded, and reservations harder to get? Lan is not for everyone. Some of our friends preferred to pass on the wild boar belly (with garam masala glaze, pureed parsnip, sweet pea sprouts). And then there is No Bread policy, which evidently offends some diners. If you come with an attitude, the servers are not tolerant. They know the food and wine well, and are friendly -- if you are.

If you want to taste some of the best new (non molecular) cooking by one of Florida's most talented chefs, you must come to Lan, and by all means take the chef's tour.

We visited Lan this evening with reiends. The menu was short and sweet.. Excellent portions and very creative. We chose the 3 course dinner which for a cost of $40 was a great deal. The short rib appitizer was out of this world. As was the Kobe beef steak.. We had 6:30 reservations and within an hour, this small place was totally filled. If you visit sarasota, Lan is not to be missed..

The most superb poetry does not do justice to the chef/team/divine culinary experience that is all things Lan.
If you appreciate exquisite food in a stylishly warm atmosphere, you simply must visit Lan yourself! From the variety of inspired seasonally changing entrees to the brilliantly crafted lighter bites of the late night menu (which is now served a bit earlier-at 9 instead of 10), your experience at Lan will leave you amazed.
As a native Sarasotan- a locale blessed with many gifted culinary artists- I can only say that I find myself coming back again and again...and again- Lan is simply my favorite!
