We were staying at the Ritz for Christmas and wanted a special celebratory dinner so I made reservations at the Verona. The atmosphere was lovely and nice enough weather to sit out on the terrace for our Christmas Eve. Because of the event they were offering a fixed priced four course dinner. They had soup, duck confit, scallops, sea bass as the fish course, venison and filet mignonette for the main and eggnog custard for desert.
My husband mentioned that he had wanted goose for dinner and they said someone else was having it too so they would see what they could do. They made goose for us too! That shows you the service you get from the Ritz! However the food was not that good. Granted we are used to food in the DC area but this is a top restaurant.
The duck confit salad was stringy and not so good. The seabass was over done and tough. We had to wait for them to prepare the goose which was tender like steak and looked like it too. It was ok not very favorful. The desert was ick!
We had Mum's champagne which was not that expensive. But when we got the bill it was 400 for two people - holy cow! That included a tip and the champagne but that was certainly way over priced for a less then outstanding meal. Service and setting were stellar not the food!
