We arrived at 11:30 just in time to miss the 11:30 boat tour. However, we purchased tickets for the last tour of the day at 1:00 p.m. We used the time in between to use the bathrooms (very clean!), to take a quick walk to the damn where the lake meets the river (great bird sightings and fishermen), and to eat lunch at the picnic tables (beware of squirrels as they have no fear of humans and will try to take your food).
The boat ride was fantastic. It is an hour in length which is just the right amount of time. The guide had a good sense of humor and really knew the names of all of the different birds. The top speed of the boat is only 8 miles an hour so you won't feel "blown away". We saw tons of alligators.
After we finished with that tour we drove around the park a bit and decided to walk the "canopy trail". This is the one you see in the photos with the bridge. It was a flat easy walk. The start of the trail said it would take 40 minutes but it did not take us this long. You will be rewarded at the end with a walk across a swinging bridge and a climb up a tower which gives you spectacular 365 degree views of the whole area.
Entrance to the park is $6.00 for 2 people and the boat ride costs $12.00 for 2 adults.

We rented a canoe and had the ride of our lives. Alligators everywhere, it was scary, exhillerating, awesome, and unbelievable. The canopy walk was cool. This is truly a gem of a park.

We took the1 hour boat tour, which we really enjoyed. Came close to many different birds, alligators etc. Not crowded which we appreciated. You can do more things in the park, but we did not have the time to spend....Make sure to check when the boat tours starts.

My husband and I just took our 2 boys (5yrs and 2yrs) to Myakka River State Park this weekend. We first stopped at the Visitor Center, but weren't too impressed. The taxidermic animals were only kind of cool. It wasn't at all up to date or hands on. I did like that they had some maps and educational handouts to take with us. We took home one with the pictures of animals and their tracks. I know my 5 year old will enjoy studying it later.

I know there are many things to do at the park, but since we have little kids, we decided to do the Boylston NatureTrail and the Canopy Walkway. My boys each carried a "discovery bag", which they filled interesting things they found along the trail, like leaves, sticks, rocks and moss. Along the way we spotted an armadillo rooting around in the dirt. That was very cool. We also enjoyed reading the educational signs along the way. I took tons of photos of my family and the park. I'll make a slideshow for my boys so we can talk about the different plant an animal life we encountered that day.

After about 40 minutes on the trail, we came to the Canopy walkway. The bridge doesn't look all that high from the ground, but it's a different story once you're on it. It offered a great view. It was a bit wobblier than I expected, but thankfully they only let 4 people cross at a time. When we got to the other side, we kept climbing up the second tower. We almost made it to the very top when we a dozen or so of wasps started swarming the stairs. We were disappointed that we didn't get to use the telescope at the top to get the best view. We'll definitely go back and try again.

I'd also like to add that the November weather was perfect for a day in the woods. I wore jeans and was perfectly comfortable. I'm sure it's way to hot to go in the summer without a bunch of water. My kids can't wait to do the Canopy Walkway again.
