I recommend this to everyone I meet that likes the outdoors or wants to know about Florida. Being above the treetops to amazing! I have been several times and each time I am impressed with the park and the view. Lots of fun!

This state park is about 40 minutes from Sarasota, which we used as a base to go exploring. We were looking forward to the famous canopy boardwalk first and foremost. We visited on a Monday morning in August, expecting it to be very hot and full of mosquitos. Upon entering (entrance fee was $6 per vehicle) we found plenty of parking, we unloaded our bikes and began our ride through this beautiful park with vistas on both sides of the road. We stopped at a couple of trails to explore and found ourselves surrounded by a forest of cabbage palms. Luckily there weren't many dreaded skeeters.

Eventually, we made it to the well marked trail head for the canopy walk. After walking for a while, we were stopped by a flooded area and unable to make it to our destination. We tried to go around it but couldn't find any way. The area was mud pit and impenetrable. Oh well, wish they would told us at the entrance that the highlight of this park was totally inaccessable. That was a major blunder on the park's behalf. At least have it posted on the entrance.

Regardless of the let down with the canopy walk, we mounted our bikes and continued down the paved road. The scenery gets even better the closer one gets to the Upper Myakka Lake. The bird boardwalk provides a great view of the lake and its inhabitants. On our way through the paved road we saw deer, huge owls, and feral pigs. There is a general store near the middle of the park as well as bike rental and boat tours. There are also many miles of less traveled trails throughout the park but it was hard to determine which were still in good condition and not flooded.

Overall, we had a great time and would have rated it five stars if it werent with the lack of notice regarding the flooding of the canopy trail and other trails. If you go, make sure you ask the entrance.

We drove two hours to visit Myakka River State Park. Who knew that black cloud would hang over the park for several hours. We chose not to hike much because of the rain and the mud but we still enjoyed ourselves. We saw deer, hawks, vultures and other beautiful large water birds. The scenery is beautiful even with the rain. We plan to return this winter so we can hike on some of the trails.

We are on vacation and this rates as one of our best value for money trips.
The satff are friendly, courteous and informative. We stepped straight onto the air boat on our arrival, seeing many alligators and species of bird, including the vultures. We also later did the Canopy walk, which afforded us splendid views of the park.
All this cost us $30 between us!
The park is easy to find and well signposted. I can appreciate that with more people there, it would probably feel crowded, but for these two visitors from England, it was an unspoiled, uncommercialised, haven.
Highly recommended.

Michael, Nottingham.

This is a beautiful state park with lots of deer, alligators and birds. My husband was able to get quite close to a hawk and take a gorgeous picture. There are great walking trails and a fantastic bird walk. Lunch at the snack bar was great too. Will be camping there again I am sure.
