“Best stay on any FL beach yet”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2013

this was my 1st time to sanibel but i have stayed all over each coast of fl. my visit was during the thanksgiving holiday and it honestly was the best thanksgiving i could have ever had with having t be away from my kids. the owners are not "owners" they feel like friends and made my trip so wonderful.. the cottage i stayed in was just perfect and i love being in this section of the island.. you are smack in the middle of the refuge and steps away from the beach so you have the best of everything. the beach was not crowded like other areas and at times i felt like alone at the beach. it was an amazing trip. they have bikes there so you don't have to rent one and i rode all over the place. even on the day of my checkout they let me use a bike for one last ride down to the end of captiva. i am a runner so i would start my run on the refuge side run for a bit and then would cut over and finish on the beach. it was beautiful. sanibel offers so many outdoor things to do, i just love it. sanibel has become my go to place in fl to just get away from everything and i can't ever imagine staying anywhere else. i had privacy but knew i had a friend a phone call away if i had a problem or a question. Periwinkle cottages is what ever independent hotel/motel should strive for.....

Room Tip: just book it, you will be glad you did. you are in a residential area so when you hear the term pri...

We stayed in the Ibis cottage and it was absolutely wonderful. Great bed, comfortable living space in a quiet setting. Our Sanibel vacation was made just that bit more comfortable because for what they provide for their guests: the use of bikes, beach umbrella, towels and chairs. And the beach is a short walk away. Perfect! I cannot recommend Periwinkle cottages highly enough.

This was our sixth visit to Sanibel Island and our second stay with Periwinkle Cottages. We arrived at the Cottages on Sunday afternoon and Mark, the owner was on premesis and met with us. Once we were settled in we retrieved our private parking pass for the lot at the end of the drive and went to the beach. The beach was beautiful as always. Again as I have said in previous reviews, the complaints of the long walk to the beach are ridiculus. I am by no means in good shape and I enjoyed the walks to the beach especially in the evening to watch the sunsets. The neighbors on the drive are very nice and everyone is friendly.

Let me say that if you are looking for 5 star amenities and a large resort atmosphere then don't stay here. If you looking for a quaint quiet cottage for a laid back island getaway then this is the place for you.

The shelling on this trip was probably the best that we have ever had. We found several large welks, a lot of conch shells and some nice alphabet cones. The wife even found a broken rare Junonia. We spent several of the days on the private beach near the cottage. We went down the island to Blind Pass Beach a couple of days and were greeted by four manatees in the gulf early one morning. The dolphins were out every evening.

Took another day trip into the Everglades and located several nice alligators. Seemed like the gator population was down this year but still saw some nice ones.

The restaurants on the island are very good. Oysters at Lazy Flamingo (there are two on the island) are exceptional. Cheeburger-Cheeburger (the original) is located on the island and the burgers are very good and very big. Schnapper's Hots, RC Otters, and Island Pizza Company are also very good choices. DO NOT miss the Island Cow!!Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner. You cant go wrong. You can pick up any groceries you need at Jerry's Supermarket and the free convenient curb service is a nice touch. The prices are higher than you will find off the island but the quality of the fresh made items is very good.

I again look forward to staying at Periwinkle Cottages in the future. This was another wonderful trip to Sanibel!

Room Tip: We have only stayed in the Egret Cottage. This perfect for 4 persons.

Just back from a 3 night stay in the Heron cottage (2 bedroom/2 bath). Clean, quiet and in the perfect location if you want to be on the quiet side of the island. Only a 10 minute drive to Captiva, we found the location to be ideal. The beach at the end of the road was one of the best beaches on the island and never crowded since it's not a public beach (with facilities and parking). Our room faced a "pond" and we were lucky to see a resident alligator during our stay! Really nice beach chairs and a much need umbrella were also provided. Having a full size kitch and ample supplies was a huge plus.My only "issue" were the mosquitos and the "no seeums" that seemed to be everywhere. There is bug spray and bug repellent in the laundry room so be sure to grab a can and spray before going out or sitting outside. Kathy, one of the owners was so pleasant to deal with, something you don't find at many establishments. Our only regret is not being able to stay longer! This is a perfect retreat for a couple wanting a casual, clean, quiet spot on the island.

If you're looking for a low key no fuss stay on Sanibel for the right price and has great extras (a practically private beach just down the same road with free parking!!) then this is your place. I almost hate to leave a review because Periwinkle Cottages deserve to have the kind of people who will really appreciate what a gem it is. It's perfectly positioned for visiting Ding and the beach. We spent 7 nights during the third wk of April and feel lucky they had a free spot for us. We stayed in the Private Nest efficiency (it isn't listed on the website), and Kathy described it when I called to book in January (the other 4 cottages were booked). The nest efficiency has new appliances: a/c unit, microwave, fridge, coffeemaker; there's also shelves for storing your food & enough dishes/silverware for two. There's also a sm table & a couch in your room; we liked the high ceiling which made it feel bright & cheerful whenever we returned from our jaunts. We particularly loved the windows over the bed that provided a birds eye view of the pond. There's a grill on the patio and a laundry rm next door which we didn't use. We appreciated having nice beach chairs & towels and we'll use the bikes during our next visit. Mark was on-site updating another cottage and it's clear that Mark & Kathy take pride & joy in the property and their care and attention is evident. Every day we saw something different during our morning & dusk walks and drives through Ding (amazing bird refuge) and the close-up view of the pond from our windows couldn't be beat (I joked with Mark that he needs to build a bird viewing perch since the efficiency doesn't have a porch but a side patio). Watching the gator sun bathing and gliding in the pond and the squabbling of the pair of "resident" yellow-crowned night herons was beyond cool. (Bring binoculars so you can see the details). We consider this our new "get away from it all" spot.

Room Tip: If you would like a screened in porch, the efficiency doesn't have one. There's also no sin...

We just returned home from a week at the Periwinkle "Heron" Cottage. It was wonderful. Mark and Kathy Lewis, the owners, are delightfully helpful and friendly without being intrusive. The comfortably furnished cottage included a nice kitchen, dining table and screened porch so that we could eat in when we wanted. We also had a barbecue. The drive to the cottage took us by the Darling Wildlife Refuge, making our destination feel like a private retreat. Just 300 yards from the cottage was a lovely beach with restricted access, giving us the feel that it was our private beach. The weather was glorious. We highly recommend the Periwinkle Cottages. We rented at Periwinkle for over a week in Nov, 2011 based on prior tripadvisor reviews and our expectations were met.

Prior reviewers have done an excellent job of outlining the many pluses of the cottages. This is our additional two cents:
1. We came to Sanibel for the bicycling and to explore the nature refuges/tracts. Periwinke offers a great location for these activities.
2. Appreciated the amount of items furnished in the cottage; not too much and not too little. We liked that the cottage was uncluttered.
3. Attached screen porch was lovely; allows us to call Periwinkle "A taste of old Florida with modern amenities."
