“The Place to Get Away from it All!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2009

When our family sought a Sanibel vacation spot that was close to the best island attractions, but secluded enough to feel a world away from the bustle of daily life, Ocean’s Reach was the natural choice. From expansive Gulf of Mexico views from our unit, to easy beach access for sunrise seashell strolls, to long-lasting memories of BBQs at The Grove, Ocean’s Reach wasn’t just a place to stay while we experienced the island – it defined our island experience. We would highly recommend Ocean’s Reach as the destination of choice for any Sanibel vacation!

Ocean's Reach on Sanibel Island was one of the most beautiful places we've ever stayed. It was like being on our own private, very tropical, island. And yet, everything we needed was within biking distance, including restaurants like the Island Cow where they serve great food at a very reasonable price! The bike paths are flat and nicely paved, making them a comfortable ride to almost any place on the island. And, the shady tunnels of trees, green foliage, colorful flowers, exotic birds, and other wild life make the ride beautiful as well. Our room had a wonderful view of the gulf. It was just as beautiful as the pictures, very comfortable, quiet, and well furnished. We loved every minute!

Just returned from a week at Sanibel Island. The weather was beautiful. We rented a condo Ocean's Reach. The price was actually in range with the Holiday Inn. Three adult girlfriends for a week of sand, surf and relaxation.
The weather was perfect. upper 70's-90 the whole week. We were right on the ocean with a lovely view. We were placed on the 2nd floor. The elevator was old but reliable and it was do it yourself racks to get your things in. No bellboys or staff waiting to assist for tips. We rolled our things in. The condo was perfect. Full size kitchen with everything you needed to cook with. We saved some money by cooking almost all of our meals. You can stop on the way over at Super Walmart but we mostly shopped at the local groceries Jerry's or Bailey's. They carried most of what we needed with not a huge mark up. Produce and dairy might have been a little pricier.
The condo also had a washer and dryer, so you can bring fewer clothes. A large king size comfy bed and a fold out couch. Microwave, dishwasher all the conveniences as they do not clean while you are there.
Captiva Cruises entertained us with Shell cruises and Dolphin cruises. There are also kayaks to rent at same location. If you watch the Island Sun paper (free on island) they were running coupns buy one get one free on the Captiva cruises. It was a beautiful place to relax, lay in the sun watch sun rise and set and do a whole lot of nothing.
Saw manatees, Dolphins, alligators and sun. Collected more shells than I need. Watch out for the No See Um's they are little bugs that come out at sun up and down and they bite. They appear to be immune to bug spray but locals say SKin SO SOft or something with eucalyptus helps. Watch the tide at the lighthouse it is deceptively strong. Enjoy your trip!

We prefer to rent a condo/home rather than stay in a hotel as you have more privacy and freedom. You can cook if you want, you have your own private patio, there aren't hundreds and hundreds of other guests...I could go on.

We chose the Ocean's Reach complex after weeks of studying other properties. The staff at OR was kind, helpful, responsive, and honest. I felt more secure renting from a property with a small but professional on site staff then renting from a private owner.

OR is directly on the beach. It is quite literally only a few moments walk from anywhere in the complex to the beach or pool. All of the units have screened lanais and face the ocean.

OR is very easy to find and in a clean safe area. (Although I think all of Sanibel is clean and safe)

There is a grocery store very close to OR (Jerry's). Also movie rentals, liqour store, many restaurants, a doctor, pharmacy, and many outdoor activities.

Ocean's Reach Condos was a great place to stay. It was extremely clean and well maintained. Not just the room we stayed in, but everything about the place from the Grove where you can barbecue to the pool area and beach walkway even right down to the stairwell and halls!!! I could not find one thing wrong. Our lanai had beatiful iron furniture with clean and updated pillows...we ate every meal out there!!! The beach was perfect and maybe there were 10 people at the beach at one time including us!!!!....That is how quiet and serene it was. We were lucky enough to see 4 manatees about 50 ft from the shore the first hour we were on the beach on the day we arrived!!! My husband and two other men were watching them from a distant sandbar about 10 ft away from the Manatees themselves!!! We unfortunately left our camera in our room thinking we would not see anything at 4pm!!! Were we wrong. Another young dad said he saw a pod of dolphins earlier that day!!! (if you go ALWAYS have the camera ready!!!) On our last day as we were walking the grounds of Ocean's Reach trying to take it all in a couple of hours before our flight, we saw two lizards coming out of the pond next to the Grove!!! They were beautiful!!
On our last full day, we were fortunate enought to watch a wedding take place right on the beachfront of the Condo. The walkway to the beach was being decorated with flowers and colorful sandbuckets and a beach altar was being put up and then about an hour later here comes the bride barefoot and in a beautiful gown!!! My husband and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniv. so we were so touched by the whole ceremony as we watched it from our lanai.!!! How great was that!!! Congrats to the new couple!!!
The kitchen had all the appliances you would need and we cooked a lot of our meals since that is something I find enjoyable and relaxing. Jerry's supermarket on the island is great!! There is also a Publix in Fort Meyers before you leave the mainland. There were plenty of dishes, utensils, plates etc.. We had a choice of 3 different coolers that were with our room for our excursions throughout the Island. These came in handy for keeping food and drinks cold as it was 87 degrees in the early am when we went on our morning seaside runs. Bowman's Beach was our early morning destination for a run and shell seeking. The shells are great really anywhere you go!!! We found great shells right at Oceans Reach beachfront. We had chairs sand toys etc that the owner's of our condo had for us to use. The kingsize bed was extremely comfortable. Everything worked perfect in our Condo and the bathroom and kitchen were udated and spotless!!! Our room had two plasma screen tv's and we got to watch the Steelers win!!!(from Pittsburgh) All in all the island was perfect but Ocean's Reach was perfect as well and sometimes we just stayed there because it was a vacation in itself!!! My husband snorkeled and found some great shells!!! @ oceans reach. The plantings are so beautiful and natural you really feel as if your on a tropical island somewhere far away from the US. The groove on the whole island is slow and easy and conducive to total relaxation. If you are trying to get away from stress and the "busyness" of life, this is the place and Ocean's Reach would be my choice again and again for accomodations. We are already looking to visit soon and bring our college aged kids with us. They can't wait!!!

The location of Oceans Reach is good and gives immediate access to the beach. That is its best selling point in my opinion. Other parts of our experience were less positive.
In spite of apparently being rebuilt after Hurricane Charlie, I think the resort looks a little tired. We stayed in 4B4.

The master bedroom was satisfactory, although I don't understand why two ill-fitting, creased, curtains were the best they could provide, given that the window was on the wall where the sun rises. These loose curtains, did not stop any light coming in and looked as if they were thrown on to the pole. They covered less than two-thirds of the window.

The second room had two twin beds. It was a very noisy room (air con or humidifier, plus it's on the walkway) and very dark. The two lamps barely lit the room. It wasn't at all inviting. The wardrobe in this room was cluttered with an old bedside cabinet, which was full of old ornaments and there were also various pictures, which, presumably had previously been hung on the walls.

There were old coffee makers etc in the cupboard under the sink and other clutter in other cupboards. All in all, it felt like the owners had little respect for the experience of the renters and I would suggest you try another condominium until the owners make the place more inviting.

The living area and kitchen were satisfactory, but that's about it. The condominium was quite small and not a patch on the Marriott resort rooms we had in Orlando.

The swimming pool has little shade for most of the day. There are 2 umbrella bases and, most days there was an umbrella in one of them! I asked the receptionist if it was possible to provide other bases or at least another umbrella. All he said was, "they keep getting wrecked". Presumably this means that the wind catches them and whisks them off. So... he described the problem, but did nothing to suggest any kind of solution! I would encourage him to look at the permanent umbrellas used by The Island Cow restaurant. Two of those, put around the pool would help a great deal, given the temperatures are usually in the 80s and 90s and the sun if fierce.

You need to know that you will either need to take, or pay for beach towels here. You also pay for umbrellas for the beach. In the store, by the covered car parking bay, you will find various seats for the beach. The store for this condominium was messy, smelly and had various rusty items, the legs of a wooden cow (?), old bedside cabinets and lots of stuff that I would call junk. Again... owners, please get your act together in terms of respecting your guests.

Condos are privately owned so take a lot of care when choosing which condo to rent. Another guest suggests you try Tarpon Bay, which apparently has larger and more modern, brighter condos.

Another thing to consider is that September is a very quiet month. Great for getting around, but some restaurants and attractions are closed, often for repairs, refubishment or the owners' own holidays. When we arrived the No. 1 attraction (Thriller) and the No. 1 restuarant (Mad Hatter) were both closed for the duration of our stay (9 days). A number of other restaurants were also closed. So, think about what you want, should you decide to come in September. Most of the restaurants etc had notices saying they would be open late September or early October.

In the busy months a bicyle is needed, but not in the less busy months. It can be quite a ride from your resort to anywhere, so take that into account.

Try the Segway from Billy's Rentals.... a lot of fun. The Tarpon Bay Explorers kayak is also a really good experience. I hope this helps.

We are greatly disappointed that you left Ocean’s Reach with an unpleasant review of your stay. The goal of our on-site management team is your complete satisfaction. Obviously, we did not fulfill our job. But we are also disappointed that you did not give us the opportunity to rectify your issues immediately during your stay or offer you another condo to stay in. We have a team of six on-site technicians, grounds keepers, housecleaners, and customer service reps to assist you with your reservation, check-in, condo issues, Sanibel questions and departure. We are here for you during your entire stay! All you have to do is call us or drop in with any concerns you have. Further, we provide both written and on-line owner surveys for our guests to talk to us.

You pre-selected and reserved condo 4D4 (not 4B4), a two bedroom condo with both a corner and a direct view of the ocean from the 4th (penthouse) floor. Our policy for guests who find a condo unacceptable for any reason is to accommodate the guest in an alternate condo or if requested, immediately perform the needed repairs. Many of our guests find it acceptable to stay in the condo of their choosing and have the necessary repairs completed during their stay. Others choose not to have any work performed during their stay. We then schedule the work to be performed following the departure of the guest.

Regarding the specific complaints of your condo, the resort and your storage compartment, several of these issues were written on the condo condition report which was performed the week prior to your arrival. All of our condos go through a rigorous inspection and rehabbing during the months of August, September and October. I have a different “take” on our being “worn” that you referred to. I believe that we are continuing to bring Ocean’s Reach back to life following the hurricane. Phase 1 was renovating the condos from the studs in. Our current Phase 2 is redesigning the landscaping and grounds. There was a beehive of activity on-site during your stay. All of our condos were undergoing some phase of re-conditioning. We expanded the landscaping beds just outside every condo building. We rebuilt our two beach boardwalks to the sea. We created new foot washing stations and built the start of a shelling center that includes a shell cleaning area. Ocean’s Reach has never looked better!

In looking at the condition report performed just prior to your arrival, we noted our request for drape replacement, new furniture, etc. Many quarterly maintenance issues and repairs were performed the week following your stay. New furniture and drapes will be forthcoming. During the upcoming deep clean, any extra non-essential small appliances, accessories will be removed. 4D4 is an extremely popular condo and our goal is to have the interior furnishings be as deluxe as the magnificent view it affords our guests.

Pool umbrellas provide a continual maintenance problem on our small pool and deck. Because our pool is located on the beach, it is susceptible to damage from our tropical breezes. Further, the umbrellas are large and cumbersome in scale to the size of our pool. However, we do not give up on creating new ideas for the enjoyment and needs of our guests. We will keep working on that one!

The guest room window opens up to the exterior corridor. The air conditioning unit is on the other side of one wall of the guest room. Perhaps those are the two unpreventable possibilities for noise?
The storage area was also scheduled for cleaning following your visit. I apologize that it housed as much “stuff” as it did. All non-essentials have now been thrown away. Again, if we miss something, we have maintenance personnel, housekeeping personnel and grounds keepers on site six days a week. This clean up could easily and immediately been taken care of. We do apologize for this unpleasant inconvenience.

There is no reason for any guest to not have an enjoyable, relaxing, healthy vacation at Ocean’s Reach. We both agree that we have the best beachfront location and view from every condo. But our management also believes that our condos and resort are the finest on the island. Our on-site Guest Services team goes the extra mile for all of our guests. Our resort policies are enforced for the benefit of all guests but we offer much in the way of flexibility when meeting the needs of each and every guest. While we can not guarantee perfection, we do guarantee your complete satisfaction. The success of Ocean’s Reach has been built with lasting friendships and long term relationships with our guests. We invite your return visit to 4D4 next year should you return to Sanibel. I look forward to discussing its improvements and the issues you have raised. Please call me so we can discuss further.

I was looking for a place to completely "get away" before starting the school year. I am a first grade teacher who spent the summer moving to a new school. My husband suggested getting away from it all for a week. We have always wanted to visit Sanibel and we heard about Ocean's Reach. Our 21 year old daughter joined us and it was wonderful! Beautiful condo, right on the Gulf of Mexico. Totally relaxing. All the amenities we could ask for. A very helpful, but low key staff. Palm trees, dolphins, an ocean breeze, and fantastic restaurants. Not to mention all the shells! I told my husband it would be fine with me if he wanted to take me back every year!
