“Lovely atmosphere.....food just okay.”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

We are foodies and like high quality fresh food. We are prepared to pay higher prices for spectacular dining experiences. We had high hopes going to Sweet Melissa's Cafe after reading reviews. The atmosphere was lovely.....unfortunately; the food was just okay for the high prices. We felt as if they are trying too hard to create very unique dishes. I had the special of the evening it was a seafood "fettuccine" which was served in this very oversized bowl with a little depression in it. I barely found any seafood and what bits I did find were chewy, served in a seafood broth, with a thin green "fettuccine". It was an interesting bland combination and I was very disappointed. My travel mate opted for standard menu items as opposed to a daily special - ordering a fresh salad with goat cheese and pears; and 2 small plates one with watermelon, ahi tuna, and olives (sweet and salty delicacy); and the other a goat cheese crepe. The menu was certainly unique and it seemed like you have better luck ordering standard menu items as opposed to daily specials. We both ordered house specialty drinks which were just fine.

“Nice setting, food was OK”
Reviewed December 16, 2012

Sweet Melissa's has an open kitchen design, modestly elegant and comfortable setting. The Saturday night we were there had a guitarist playing at the hostess stand, right as we entered. We had high hopes for the food.

A good rustic bread (just four little slices for the two of us) arrived with a fruity olive oil seasoned with coarse salt and pepper. Our server was efficient and pleasant and seemed to be enthused about the menu. My husband's appetizer was the pork belly and clams, which he said was "standard at best" but his real annoyance centered around the fact that it was served in a big dish with a little depression in it for the food - included in the appetizer was whole pieces of baby bok choy which were impossible to eat unless he took them out and cut them on his bread plate, or, as he puts it "tried to cram them down his throat whole." My salad featured house-made ricotta which was flavorless, a salad that had too many bacon lardons in it, and a dressing that was overly acidic.

I had the scallops for an entree, and they were fine, served over a farro and corn mixture. My husband's fish stew was "standard" (again, his words). For dessert we split basically a deconstructed key lime pie, with layers lined up in a glass, served with a cinnamon graham cookie on the side. Two of the three layers were tasty, but the white chocolate panna cotta was too heavy on the white chocolate and the "cookie" was not good at all. The best part of the meal for me was the white port cocktail (I had two) which consisted of white port wine, lemon juice, and sparkling water - light, balanced and delicious.

This is not a cheap restaurant - with a tip we spent about a $150 for dinner for the two of us. We certainly don't mind paying for a good meal, but this place just wasn't worth it.

“Fine food in a wonderful atmosphere”
Reviewed December 14, 2012

This is a great date restaurant on beautiful Sanibel Island. A quiet, romantic atmosphere with attentive service and really fine food. The sea bass was wonderful; a big portion and lot's of marvelous veggies. The scallops were perfect. There is a very good wine list.

They offer a full portion and a partial on the menu. It was nice in that, for a gourmet restaurant you can get a really substantial portion or you can choose a more petite meal. This feature along with the quality of the food is great reason to get to Sweet Melissa's.

We will be back and we recommend Sweet Melissa's for a date or night out with friends.

“A quite lunch in a busy place”
Reviewed December 13, 2012

My wife and I went on a day trip biking on Sanibel Island. We went to Sweet Melissa's for lunch. The menu had more than the usual fair. The service was very good and so was the price. We dined outside on a screened in porch and found the music and atmosphere relaxing.

Definitely a great place for lunch.

“No big deal”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Dinner here was ok, but we probably won't be back. Drinks and salad were excellent, once you got to dinner they seem to try a little too hard for "upscale". The salad would have been fine without the fried avocado and definitely pass on the squid ink linguini. Obviously the kitchen has great skill, just a little too over- the-top.
