“Perfect In Every Way!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2011

We stayed here over the 4th of July holiday weekend. We were looking for a secluded, restful place to get away from it all, and the Blue Dolphin was absolutely perfect. We stayed in #4, which is a small efficiency with a view of the Gulf from the front patio and a small shared outdoor shower out back. The room was spare but very clean, and the small kitchenette included a set of dishes, cookware, and some utensils so we were able to make a few meals during our stay.

What we loved most about the Blue Dolphin: all cottages are only steps away from a gorgeous white sand beach covered with shells; other guests were mostly older, nice couples - in such a small, intimate place, the other guests felt like friends after just a day; the seclusion and quiet - we felt like it was our own private beach, even during the busy holiday weekend; free wi-fi internet (not that we used it much with the beach right there); free use of beach chairs, umbrellas, & bicycles; peaceful beach with a low surf, warm water, and shallow a long way out; access to a laundry room on site; landscaping made every cottage feel private; staff was very unobtrusive but kind and accommodating when needed; quiet reading and sleeping on the lanai next to the beach; and last but not least, the wildlife - we saw more cool animals on this property than we did at the wildlife preserve - we swam with wild dolphins every day of our stay, saw osprey catching fish in the surf, sea turtle nests, ibis, pelicans, crabs, tiny lizards, live shells, etc, it was a wonderful show every day! Several of our fellow guests were fishing in the surf daily and seemed to be happy with their catches, so this is probably also a good location for anglers.

Note: if you want a "resort" type atmosphere with a pool, kids splashing/screaming, and lots of activity, this is probably not the place for you. The Blue Dolphin is the kind of place one goes to get away from it all - peaceful, sedate, and relaxing! We are mid-30s with no kids, and the gestalt here was so utterly perfect for us that we didn't want to go home. We are already thinking about our next vacation at the Blue Dolphin!

Room Tip: Honestly, no room is bad on this property!

Steps from gorgeous, nearly empty beach, cozy, friendly, easy, stress-free, free lounge chairs and umbrellas, free continental breakfast, cheerful staff, laid-back place... the kind of place that you almost hate to tell anyone about because you don't want it to be booked solid when you are trying to book for your next stay!!! Best for couples or young families; shallow water for quite a ways out, easy to see your toddlers, beautiful clean sand and lots of shells. Very quiet, peaceful; world's nicest and friendliest people stay here. :) We met couples from Europe and singles and families from across the States. My husband and I are already planning our return trip. If you want luxury and noise, do not come here. If you want easy peace, book now!

Room Tip: All the units are literally steps from the beach.

I have vacationed at the Blue Dolphin about half a dozen times and my girlfriend and I just love the place! Always friendly neighbors and an excellent staff. You can keep the giant beachfront box hotels that spoil the view and cost a fortune. The Blue Dolphin is our favorite beach holiday destination in the states! We relax into puddles as soon as we arrive, Wish we could live there!

Room Tip: Ask waht they have!

I never thought that I'd stay in a perfect hotel with a location as ideal as this one....simply the best holiday ever.
Cabin number 6 has beautiful views through palms over an unspoilt and beach; as for the room...clean, light and airy with cooking facilities, a large fridge, TV (not that we needed it), wireless internet and an en suite with bath and shower . The only gripe would be the that the bed, instead of a King size, was two singles pushed together.

A "help yourself" breakfast was available outside every morning with interesting choices of bread, muffins, pastries, fruit and cereals. Snacks could be taken away and eaten later on the beach much to my delight!

And now on to what there was to do every day....
Walking on the beach was simply a joy...sandy and litter free. It went on for ever with hardly any people on it at all. Every now and then we'd come across the odd couple under an umbrella or fishing from the shoreline. Shells are everywhere....different sizes , shapes and colours...free to pick up and take home.
Lovely swimming....warm water...no pollution.

The hotel provided free bikes...fabulous if a little difficult to get used to at first; the brakes were activated by peddling backwards. Not the easiest if you haven't ridden in a long while but perfectly manageable after a few hesitant attempts on my part.

A nature lovers paradise....we saw pelicans, ibis, cranes and a host of other birds. Dolphins swam close to the shore...tiny fish, jumping fish and edible fish were everywhere. Strange bio luminescent insects appeared on the ground at night... Patches on their heads shone like giant vibrant green headlights...Now I know where science fiction writers get their ideas from!

I congratulate the management on providing an ideal place to relax and rediscover the true meaning of the word "holiday".

This place is charming - we only had two days here, but mellowed out instantly upon arrival. As an avid shell collector, I was in heaven - have never seen so many beautiful sea shells! My husband swam with dolphins, restaurants are a short drive away, peace, quiet and sunshine abound - it was wonderful. Any reviews you read about bright lights at night are not true - by regulation they have to keep lights to a minimum at night so sea turtles will not be disturbed, so don't know what those reviewers were talking about. Reviewers that need services such as daily housekeeping, room service, spas, gift shops and restaurants on site should stay somewhere else. This place is perfect if you want a laid back, low key and restful retreat. We'll DEFINITELY be back!
