“Perfect location close to beautiful beach. Great personable staff.”
Reviewed February 6, 2011

We stayed in the Sea Chest room last May, and it was perfect for our week-long Florida vacation. The room was clean (except for the sand we brought in with us) and quiet. The blinds didn't quite block the morning sun, however. The owners were very helpful and available. A family member sent us flowers and they took care of receiving it and delivering them to us.

We spent a lot of time on the beautiful, peaceful, private beach. We even saw some dolphins near the shore one day. Neighboring properties are all houses, keeping the number of people on the beach even lower. We were there in the off-season, which probably also contributed to that. The two pools and grounds were nicely kept. The on-site wifi was handy for plotting out what to do on the islands.

Overall great vacation, we've recommended to friends.

We returned to Mitchell's Sand Castles because we had spent Christmas 2006 there and had a wonderful time. It was even better this December with the upgrades the new owners have made. We love staying in cottages and expect them to show their age a little but the new renovations are excellent and well done. We stayed in Beachcomber, and Sea Chest--the rooms were very clean, very comfortable, and roomy. Well equipped kitchen, big soft fluffy towels in the bathrooms.....it was such an enjoyable week. Couldn't ask for a better vacation!

My wife and I just spent a week's vacation at Mitchell's Sand Castles, and we couldn't have been happier. Our unpretentiously comfy one-bedroom cottage was steps away from the Gulf of Mexico--we watched the sun set every night. The facilities, including the heated swimming pools, were clean and extremely well kept. Our friendly, attentive, unfailingly helpful hosts did everything they possibly could to make our stay more pleasant. We really felt as though we'd escaped from the rest of the world: Mitchell's isn't exactly isolated, but when you go there, you know you've gotten away from it all. We intend to go back as soon as we possibly can.

We had no prior reservations, so searched for beachfront accommodations. Located on a quiet road that's really a dead end road. Cabin was clean, nicely decorated, full view of the gulf (sunsets), fully equipped kitchen, and all the extras: bikes, kayaks, take-to-the-beach lawnchairs. Owners are very hospitable and accommodating. Close to large bird sanctuary. Within biking distance of many attractions. You can leave your car parked and walk /bike most everywhere.

Mitchell's Sandcastles is wonderfully quiet and peaceful. I stayed here with my mom and my son. I have never enjoyed the quiet at night like I did here. Mitchell's is ideally located just minutes away from the hubbub of the tourist shops so you can enjoy the best of both worlds - quiet and a little shopping. The beaches are pristine as are the cottages. The shower in my cottage was better than the one I have at home and the sheets on the beds were satiny - a perfect cover on the Goldilocks perfect beds - not too soft and not too hard! The pools are heated and very clean, the bicycles are plenty and in good working order and the kayaks are a nice bonus and very easy to use (not tippy at all!). My mom and my son both loved the place so that makes three generations of pleased guests under one roof. Joel and Kim are kind and accommodating hosts who are there all the time but quietly in the background in case you need them. I didn't get to meet Maria, the other host, but I heard from another cottager that she is cut from the same cloth. I researched my stay on Sanibel extensively before choosing Mitchell's and they met and surpassed my expectations. Thanks for a great vacation.

This property consists of attached- and some stand-alone cottages located right behind the beach. We stayed in a one-bedroom stand alone (Sea Star) that worked well for our 9-night visit. The unobstructed view from the screened porch was palm trees, beach grass, and the Gulf. The website shows the layout of the property and which cottage is which, and the owners are happy to clarify any questions about location. There are laundry facilities and a computer room. We used the latter to print out our boarding passes for the trip home.

We found the bed was especially comfortable. The small kitchen had what is needed. There are two pools on the property which can be important if you visit during the winter months when the Gulf is too cold for swimming. The cottage was unpretentious and on the rustic side-- wood walls and floor -- which was no surprise as we had stopped by to have a look on a previous visit to the island. We chose to stay here rather than a modern condo or resort with lush landscaping, multi-story living, and more neighbors. The aura at Mitchell's is more of a bygone Florida, rather homelike. Pets are permitted and seemed better behaved than some people...but one can encounter the inconsiderate anywhere.

Our experience of Sanibel has been that beach proximity has a lot to do with prices. The older cottage establishments, which are few, seem to have some units closer to the beach than newer, larger condos or resorts. Mitchell's has been and continues to be improved by the current owners who we've found to be both friendly and very helpful. The location on West Gulf Rd. is in an area of very nice, quiet neighborhoods with little traffic. It's perhaps a 7-minute drive to Bailey's General Store, some shopping, and several restaurants. This means if you go at a busy time, you don't necessarily have to contend with traffic on Periwinkle Rd. It's also a straight shot across the island to Ding Darling. It's also easy to do take-out.

Our sense of Sanibel is that tourist traffic can be heavy and that hotels of all sorts can have a scramble to keep things uniformly up to tip-top shape. Paying for a room at a big, expensive resort is, based on Trip Advisor reviews, not going to guarantee you will get the service or quality one might expect. Mitchells scores highly in our experience, and having access to the owners should a need arise is a plus.

First, we'd like to thanks the owners for their great service of this wonderful place and resort in Sanibel, away from the traffic and the crowd. No condos nearby, no shops but everything is close by bike or by car.

If you're looking for something with real cottages by the beach, this place is for you.

We've stayed only 2 nights in late December 2010 and we've enjoyed it. We had cottage # 4 as booked and it was nicely appointed. Large fridge, full kitchen, TV, A/C, and full bathroom, but no bath. Bed was comfortable. Cottage was big enough for us 2.
We could park the car just next to the cottage and even enter it from the rear door in the bathroom.
Small patio as well with table and chairs outside.
The resort is nice, like the beach and "shelling" is a must there.
Unfortunately, it was cold when we were there so we hope to come back sooner or later.

You can use free bikes, play tennis or use the 2 swimming pools.
Thanks again!
