“We won the lottery!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

My wife and i were looking for a place for dinner at the last minute. We called and were lucky enough to get a reservation for 700pm. The hostess said that they had been booked up for weeks and she had just had a cancellation. We arrived to find that the service was friendly and were seated in this small 45 seat restaurant with a wonderful view of the sunset. The appetizers were flavourful and the salads were great. My wife enjoyed the bouillabaise and i enjoyed the fish special. It was one of our better meals and certainly the best we have ever had on Sanibel. As per other reviews, this restaurant is on the more pricey side but the food is excellent. We found the service brisk but not pushily so. We were served our next course promptly after finishing the preceding. I think that we were there for just over 1. 5 hours. I did not think it was unreasonable given that it is a relatively small restaurant and they need to move people through. Overall we felt we won the lottery.

“Dining Room with a View”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

Small, funky restaurant for upscale dining. Great food, good wines and friendly wait staff. Good for that special night out but also good with kids who are used to fine dining. We have made several visits and never had a bad experience.

“A Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

The Mad Hatter is a small, excellent restaurant. The service is attentive without being overdone, and never hurried. The food is creative and well-executed (exception noted below). The western seaside setting sets it apart from many others in Sanibel-Captiva and the room is intimate, whimsical, and inviting.

We both had the evening special, grilled sea bass served with beet risotto, blood orange butter sauce, and asparagus spears -- all perfectly prepared. We shared a triple dessert sampling, also wonderful.

My disappointment was the ceasar salad. The romaine had been cut into 1-inch lengths and the dressing tasted like any I'd ever had in a roadhouse -- not consistent at all with the rest of the meal!

I quickly forgave that error when I tasted the rest, hence my overall "excellent" rating.

“Wonderful food and service! And that view....!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

All of us loved the Mad Hatter!! Goat cheese puffs, lamb that melt in your mouth, shrimp in a fillo nest... it was all divine. We happen to be there just after sunset and the view of the ocean was gorgeous. The service was also perfect. Very friendly and efficient. This restaurant deserves its place as # 1 restaurant in Sanibel! Book reservations early.

“Wonderful food - well worth the drive from Ft Myers Beach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2013

My Mom and I only spent 4 days on FMB, so we wanted to go to one really special restaurant. We selected Mad Hatter because of its high ratings and reviews on Trip Advisor, and we were not disappointed. As suggested, we made reservations the day of our meal. We arrived right on time and were seated immediately. As others have noted, the restaurant is small and table are close together, so it can also get a tad loud at times. The food was excellent. We were served a basket of warm bread as well as a "compliments of the chef" tasting of crab legs. We both had the special soup of the day (carrot and ginger) which was excellent. I then had the special Sea Bass and my Mom had the duck. We each had dessert - I had the trio and she the Creme Brulee. We agreed that all of the meal was wonderful - beautifully plated and well served. The wait staff was very friendly, helpful and professional. We each had 1 glass of wine. The total bill was around $150 (entrees seem to run between $29-$40). Although we got there just a tad late to see the sun set, the restaurant appears to have a wonderful wide view of the Gulf.

Parking is free and there are about 10 spaces in front and additional parking in the rear. It is very easy to get to, as it is on the main road to between Sanibel and Captiva.

We highly recommend making the trip to enjoy the excellent food and service.
