Sanibel Cafe has the best parfait (healthy breakfast) I've eaten. Yes, I've tried many others, on and off the island. There is no comparison. It is a perfect balance of fruit, yogurt, and granola. I had one every day for the week I was there, except for one other day that we tried another restaurant for breakfast. Went right back the next day. All year long, I salivate (mmmmm) just thinking of my next visit. Can't wait! It is a generous portion and with a piece of their raisin toast and homemade jam -- just being on Sanibel is paradise -- but add the Sanibel Cafe parfait and it is truly heavenly.

The food here is well-regarded, and the folks here do come up with some interesting takes on the usual seafood dishes. But we had an awful experience here. Our young daughter has some serious food allergies. We have good success taking her out to restaurants when we explain to the staff that she’s gluten- and dairy-free, and at Sanibel Café we were assured that a nut-encrusted fish dish would be safe. But after digging in for a few bites, our daughter started to show signs of a food infraction (we can tell by the onset of “spacey” behavior”). We probed both our server and the manager, and finally got them to concede that “maybe” the crust was held together with milk, not just eggs as we’d been told. By this time, the cooks had left for the day (we were among the last ones seated for lunch). The server did try to reach the cooks by mobile phone but failed.

We were promised by the server and manager on duty that we’d get a phone call as soon as they could track down the cooks, but this never happened. Finally, two days later, on our third call back we got an admission that there was indeed milk in the crust. By then there was little we could do in the way of medicating the effects of a confirmed food infraction.

Throughout this time, there was no apology rendered, no offer to drop the offending item from the bill (after it became clear that our daughter could not continue eating it), no reaction at all, other than nonchalance on the part of the serving staff. We definitely had the impression that the staff considered us an imposition, and thus didn’t perform due diligence on the ingredients, nor keep their promises to call us back once they did get the information after the fact. Thank goodness our daughter’s food allergies are not life-threatening! For me, such an uncaring attitude trumps everything, and I’ll never go back here.

Walked over to Sanibel Cafe when CheBurger said the wait was 15 minutes and the place was only half-full. Ordered the Rusty Pelican and the wife got a veggie burger. Both meals were good. Seemed like they use all their servers at every table. There was a different person every visit. I'd go back.

Our favorite place for breakfast and lunch! What a jewel! The food is absolutely delicious; always cooked to perfection. The service is wonderful! The tables have interesting seashell displays underneath and the restaurant has its own home-made jams (raspberry is best!)

Has the look and feel of a small town diner.

The Rusty Pelican sandwich is terrific! Don't bother with the quesadilla. Serivce was prompt and friendly.
