The website and the location is what drew me to stay at The Castaways. But would I stay here again? NO.
Pros:
Directly behind Blind Pass for great shelling!
At a marina if you boat
Pet Friendly
Great location if you want to visit Captiva Islands and place to eat there.

Cons: Where to start...
Little to no parking, the last 3 days we were there a man parked his large dodge truck directly in front of my unit!
Pet friendly, but they did not supply pick up bags, and no one seemed to pick up after their pets.
Staff was blah at check in. I just gave you $1,000 bucks, you could at least smile...
On the first night of the trip I returned to my unit from shelling to take my lil' dachshund puppy out to potty, BUT I could not get the door open!!! The keys would not work! I ran to the office to let them know it would not open. The lady was nice enough and got the other keys to come see if she could get it open. Unit 25, like most other have two doors. She told us about the front door..."Well you dead bolted it, they'll be no getting in there." Apparently it has a dead bolt, but no key and you are not supposed to lock it... no one told us that?!?! The side door on the patio... apparently they've had some key issues and don't know which ones work and which don't, we were given a set they DID NOT WORK... what would I have done if it was after office hours?!?! They seemed just blah about the issue.
The only staff we saw during the week were a few guys who took all week spreading out new mulch, when there was trash all over the place though... I could think of more important things besides mulch... weeding, trash pick up, poop patrol, cut the grass... the bushes and yard areas in general just looked like no one had paid them any attention in months.
Holes in our screened in porch...
Air unit almost falling out of wall...
Large stain in middle of couch...
TV did not even fit on the stand, you couldn't let children play near it.
Patio table wasting away, chair straps broke.
Something ate a hole through our bread one night on counter!!
The bathroom ... O M G... keep in mind we were in unit 25, while a couple we met on the beach said their bed linens were GROSS, she'd rather sleep on floor but her bathroom wasn't bad... but ours WOW... the toilet rocked back and forth, the cabinet at floor and behind was rotting and not clean, no room to shut door move around etc. window in shower and bars rusting...EWW EWW EWW
Front door had a large gap between door and floor to let all sorts of creatures inside.
Grout in between tiles were brown...

The Castaways is good for a shelling location and a great idea, BUT the place is not well maintained... the lysol smell over load when you open the door for the first time does not mask the falling apart, this place at least our unit and the grounds are well past there prime. Not sure what unit other travelers stayed in or what they consider OK for paying 200.00 bucks a night for, but this unit and the grounds were not it!

We returned to the Castaways for our 3rd visit and found the property clean, quiet and relaxing. We stayed next to the marina and enjoyed the sunrise and then walked across the street to watch the sunsets. We love the fact that there are 3 restaurants close by
( check out the Lazy Flamingo) and a general store for last minute shopping. We will definately stay again.

After spending a week in Miami at a 4 star hotel with all the stuffiness, i was in need of a more relaxed atmosphere without breaking the bank. We found it at Castaways. They seemed like they appreciated our business, were very accommodating in helping us with dinner reservations. The place is not fancy but right across the beach and the little cottages a bit of charm to themselves.

First, let me say that I am not sure what all the negative reviews are about. We just spent the weekend at the Castaways in Cottage 28. The room was spotless and well maintained. I only interacted with the staff on one occasion-at check-in. While I wouldn't say they guy at the front desk was overly friendly, he was polite and efficient--and they upgraded us to a waterfront room without even asking!

The hotel is series of yellow cottages on the beach, the marina and the bay. The beach here is wonderful, you can walk for miles along a beach without any buildings. Being at the far end of Sanibel, it is much quieter than the main area and you are very close to everything in Captiva. You would actually never need to get in your car. The highly rated Mad Hatter and the Lazy Flamingo restaurants are adjacent and the Island Store is right next door for anything you forgot and for food staples. Fishing and boat trips are available at the marina. There is also a small coffee bar and internet lounge at the marina. The pool is sparkling clean with nice padded lounge chairs.

As for value, Sanibel is not a budget place, so considering the other options this is a good value. Less expensive than the ween Waters down the road (and far less busy). They are owned by the same company so you are given a parking pass to park at the Tween Waters and are free to use any of their facilities.

My only qulams about room 28 were the bright dock light outside our window and the occasional person that would sit outside the room. This room doesn't have a screened in porch either (which would be nice to have considering the no see'ums).

Finally, The hotel is extremely pet friendly--in fact Sanibel is extremely pet-friendly. This is one of the only islands in Florida that allows dogs on the beach--everywhere, on a leash. And there are a number of restaurants that allow pets on their patios.

Room Tip: Beachfront and Bayside for privacy

We've been to the Castaways before and wouldn't stay anywhere else on Sanibel Island. Last time we stayed there was about 2 years ago for a family reunion and wedding, which was held on the beach. This time it was just us and the kids. Our bayside cottage was great - the beach was fabulous - the water was crystal clear and gorgeous and the staff was friendly and accommodating as usual. I'll admit I'm a bit shocked reading some of the reviews on here - everyone I spoke to while we were staying there was having a great time and said how much they enjoyed their stay. The highlight of our trip this time was seeing a dolphin come into the marina to feed. About 8 of the guests were hanging over the little private fishing dock on the bayside with their cameras snapping pics of the dolphin who was literally close enough to touch! We also went out on a canoe and saw a manatee, which was pretty cool too. We just love staying there and will be back AGAIN this summer!!

From the moment we checked in, it was a problem. For the amount of money they charge, they should be ashamed of themselves. Although Castaway Cottages knew that 6 people would be staying, they only gave us towels for 4 people. There weren't any sheets for the pull out sofa for my kids and the blanket that they provided smelled like a wet dog. The dishes and silverware were also filthy. The floors were disgusting and they actually painted the wood around the couch getting paint all over the cushions! Can you say "redneck"? Oh, and the smell in the house was gross (septic or rotten eggs). We were greeted by the housekeeper sooooo rudely and she was very confrontational! Apparently she doesn't understand who helps pay her wage. Only nice amentities was the pool. It would be definately worth your while to find another spot to stay. We have stayed on Sanibel and Captiva many times and there are much nicer places for the same money. Thank goodness we only stayed one night and believe me, it was long ENOUGH! I actually never write reviews but felt people should know. I should have listened to all the other terrible reviews!!!

We were only here one night (most guests seem to be here for an extended time frame). Rented cabin #27. Small and cozy but definately dated and not 100% clean (dog hair all over everything and very dated old furniture). But it was nice for the price we paid considering that everything else on the island is super expensive.
Pros: nice location, right next to general store and a couple of great restaurants (try the Mad Hatter across the street, best restaurant on the island.) Beach is perfect to watch sunset, pool area small but clean. Very quiet, we found that most people there were quiet and older and made it very comfortable to enjoy the setting. Hosts are gracious and are there if you need anything during business hours. Sister property Tween waters is available for you to enjoy the pool and activities at, which was nice.
Cons: Dated and old rooms. Furniture has seen better days, and needs to be replaced. Many of our windows didn't open even when we tried. Cabin was worn and dirty and had a old cigarette smell in it.
Overall, I would probably stay here again, for the price we paid it was worth it, and we knew that it wasn't going to be the Ritz going in. As long as you can look beyond and take in the beauty of the island, you will be fine.
Helpful hints: I wolud reccomend that if you do rent a cottage, do not get the one next to the restaurant. Also, if you rent the cottageson the gulf side, know that the road is right out your front door, and people are walking around your cabin getting to/from beach, so there is no privacy. We had the bay side and found it much more quiet, even though we had to cross the road to get to the beach. Parking is a JOKE on the entire island, and if I were to do this trip all over, I would probably have spent the $$ for a room at the South Seas in Captiva, then walked around that town (because you can't drive there and park anywhere for an extended period of time). Then taken a trolley or shuttle to Sanibel to see that town. I know that I will get flack for saying this, but in my opinion, Sanibel and Captiva are too crowded and have very poor planning. There were many cars on the road at all times and no place to park. I can't help to think along with the hundreds of other cars turning around on the road in Captiva that the stores and restaurants are missing an opportunity to take in business because of this problem. Sure you can drive into Captiva and park in the lot of the store, but once you are done at that store, they are clear that you must take your car 20 ft to the next store parking area while you shop there. This is completely absurd. Overall, I don't think we will return to Sanibel, in my opinion Gasparilla Island has this place beat by a mile.
