Seahorse Cottages
Reviewed January 24, 2014

If you stay at Seahorse Cottages you are within walking distance of Lighthouse Beach and the owners kindly provide beach towels and a wagon to cart your belongings. The unit we stayed in was small but tidy and had everything we needed for a brief stay--full-size fridge, microwave, and small stove. The furniture was antique oak rather than the typical beach house style. There is a table outside for cleaning off shells so you can take your beach finds home with you. The cottages are around the corner from the Lighthouse Cafe and we ate dinner there twice during our stay.

Thanks so much for taking the time to let others know you enjoyed your time at Seahorse Cottages. We are very happy you found our location to be as fabulous as we believe it is too. We find that it is so convenient to all the amenities of the island, yet tucked away on the quiet end where life moves a little slower and easier. We are also glad you found that the cottages provided you with everything you needed for a wonderful and relaxing vacation and we look forward to having you back again soon as our repeat guests! We spent a lovely peaceful week here in December staying in unit 1A. Although we were a bit nervous as other posters had said this unit is only suitable for single travellers we found it absolutely fine for us. We were out on the complementary bikes most of the time anyway and when we came back to the cottage we sat outside on either of the two decks. The cottage had everything we needed and we would love to come back to this idyllic island some time and if we do we would certainly want to stay at Seahorse.

Thanks so much for taking the time to let us and others know how much you enjoyed your time on Sanibel at Seahorse Cottages. We are so happy your vacation was peaceful and relaxing and that you found the studio the perfect place for you. Having both those porches does come in handy when you either want to grab some of our wonderful sunshine on the private sundeck, or when later in the day perhaps you've had enough and want to stay under cover on the second porch. We are so glad you are thinking of coming back to Sanibel and we will be here to greet you upon your return. Our return guests become like family to us! Thanks again. Peggy and Keith

My husband & I recently returned from 2 weeks of peace, nature, and relaxation at Seahorse Cottages #3. We absolutely loved it there. My husband got a 3-day non-resident fishing license. He had a short walking distance to go on-shore fishing on the Bay side and off the fishing pier. While he fished, i took a short walk to the Gulf shore side to do some great shelling and soak in the warmth of the sun. The wagon, beach chairs, shelling equipment and shell washing station was great! The cottage had everything we needed, except our food, clothes and personal items. The gas and charcoal grills worked great for burgers, my husband's fresh caught fish, which was delicious, and of course steaks. We loved sitting on the back deck near the pool, watching the small lizzards and listening to the birds. The only problem we had was the No-see-ums, but with some bug body spray they disappeared. I still have sores from scratching where they bit me before I knew they existed! We ventured to the Ding Darling preserve, the Bailey's Shell Museum, the Strauss live theater to see a 1-man Shakespeare show, drove to Captiva to see the sweetest small old white church perched on the water's edge, to Bowman's beach and the National sand sculptor's exhibition on Ft. Myers Beach and to Lover's Key north park. We had to get our ice cream right around the corner at the famous homemade ice cream shop and ate a great breakfast at the Lighthouse Cafe in the same small complex. The Sanibel Island lighthouse was neat and very different from the ones here in Michigan. We spent many hours walking the beaches or relaxing by the pool or on the back deck. Peggy and Keith, our hosts, thought of everything! The bikes, helmets, shelling equipment/washing station, beach chairs, wagons, small coolers, gas and barbeque grills, flash lights, and beautiful antique oak furniture pieces that made us feel at home. We will definitely return to Seahorse Cottages. We loved it! It was like a small house complete with cooking utensils and all the items, except the food, one would need to cook and eat at home. I hate eating at restaurants every day, so this was great. We did have a nice prime rib dinner at Jerry's restaurant (inside Jerry's Market) before we went to our Shakespeare show for our big night out.

Room Tip: Since the 4 various-sized cottages are attached, we like our unit #3 because it was on the end by th...

If you are looking for a quiet, clean, quaint location, this is it. Staff was very friendly. Pool was cleaned everyday. We stayed at The Seahorse Cottages 10 nights and twice we saw property clean up crews come through and maintain the property. The Seahorse Cottages are ideally located near the Lighthouse Beach. In fact my husband and I walked to the Lighthouse Beach. Also located within walking distance is the East Side Deli. Try the Cuban Panini. Yum! Pick up lunch at the East Side Deli on your walk to the beach. How convenient! Pinochio's Homemade Ice Cream is perfect to visit on your way back to the cottages after a long, warm day at the beach. I will secure reservations at The Seahorse Cottages for next year! I can't wait to get back to paradise.

First off, let me say that we were very happy with the accommodations. I researched many of the places to stay on Sanibel, and I found Seahorse Cottages to be a perfect fit. It is in a great location for accessing the beaches on the Lighthouse side of the island, and it is very quiet. My wife and I have not had a vacation alone in quite a while, and this locale provided the perfect respite. I spoke with the hostess several times during our stay, and she and her husband were most attentive. The amenities are basic, but the room was great. We love Sanibel!

We recently stayed for three nights and had a good stay. The location is near the lighthouse and mostly residential. The bed was comfortable and mattress new. The pool is tiny but great for a quick swim. Our room was clean except for the tiny ants in the kitchen which was totally unexpected. We put all our food in the refrigerator and dined on the porch since the weather was good. We would go back.

Thanks for staying with us at Seahorse Cottages and thanks for taking the time to let others know you enjoyed your stay and will be coming back. Repeat guests are the heart of our business. The majority of our guests have been here before, most many times, returning each year and becoming like family to us. We look forward to greeting you again when you return.

We are sorry about the ants, as we do have a pest control company on call each and every day who will come and treat for any problem that arises. As the end of the rainy season approaches, they apparently found there way into that one cottage. The problem actually was taken care of last week, as soon as I found out about it from the previous review. I called, they came the same day, and the problem has gone. We only wish we could have done that for you while you were here! We always make a point of asking each guest if everything is ok in the unit, or is there anything that needs our attention multiple times during their stay. Next time, treat us like family....if something needs our attention please let us know! We welcome the opportunity to fix anything that we can to make your stay perfect!

My husband and I spent 5 nights at Seahorse Cottages in search of some peace and quiet on our final holiday before having our first baby. We were encouraged by the reviews we'd read and confident that Seahorse Cottages offered the best value of Sanibel Island accommodations.

Our stay was ok - the weather was lovely and we swam in the ocean off a different beach every day. However, our experience of Seahorse Cottages wasn't quite what we were expecting.

PROS:
- Small, quiet resort
- Large comfortable living space (we had to take a deluxe one bedroom because the one bedrooms were booked two months before our trip)
- Good A/C
- Free parking
- Complementary beach chairs, umbrellas, carts and bikes
- Quiet location

CONS:
- Non-existent innkeeper or maid service, making this overpriced. We appreciated that it's a small place, but didn't see anyone by way of an innkeeper for the duration of our stay, so couldn't ask advice about how things worked in the cottage, get help with the grill or get local recommendations (though there was an exhaustive binder of local info in the cottage)
- The kitchen was well-equipped in terms of appliances, but there was little by way of pantry staples which one doesn't want to buy for such a short visit - no cooking oil, for example. Also, there was a big ant problem, including in the cupboards, which meant we kept our dry goods stuffed in the microwave. We did our best to keep the surfaces clean but there was only washing up liquid to use. If the ants are a feature of the climate/location, then it'd be a good idea for the kitchen to be equipped with surface spray to keep them at bay.
- thin walls - we could clearly hear our neighbour(s) snoring!
- contrary to the photograph on the front of our welcome back, there are no cushions for the pool furniture - you have to sit on the rubbery slats.
- not a fault of the establishment by any means, but something worth bearing in mind is that Sanibel is rife with sandfleas/'no see ums', making it impossible to take advantage of the nice decking areas if you're prone to getting bitten.

Thanks for taking the time to offer your review of Seahorse Cottages on Sanibel. I'm sorry that your stay was not what most others feel is a wonderful time. I'm glad that you found our accommodations a "large and comfortable living space" and our location "quiet" and enjoyed the complimentary bikes, beach equipment, wagons etc. These are all things that most also find very important during their stay with us.

I do want to address some of your concerns however and wish that I had had the opportunity to discuss them with you in person. You mention a "non existent" innkeeper. We are, in fact, on the property every day mid morning to at least early afternoon and sometimes longer. While there we try to be as unobtrusive as possible so that you can enjoy the quiet atmosphere you mentioned and some private time alone together. We are also available 24 hours via phone, and I did in fact speak to you once regarding your concern for no cushions on the pool chairs. Our pool chairs are high end, strapped lounge and beach chairs. I know you spoke to our manager, Shauna, when she noticed you were using pillows from the cottage for your pregnant wife, and thought perhaps you might want some other ones that she had in the office, but you declined. Both Shauna and I, are long time island residents and could answer any questions you may have had during your stay regarding recommendations, directions, etc at any time during our time on the property each day of your stay or again by phone at anytime. Since you did not do this, we are glad that you found the binder we provided with suggestions and information "exhaustive " We are sorry that you found the lack of "staples" in the kitchen displeasing but unfortunately law prohibits us from leaving any such things. We take these laws as well as those that we are licensed under very seriously and therefore even empty out the ice trays with each guests departure. Ants can be a problem especially at the end of the rainy season when they all seem to want to come inside, and so we have an exterminator who arrives any day we ask for him to treat if guests have told us there is a problem. We are very happy with his results, as they are always immediate. If you had told me when you called, or when Shauna approached you asking if you needed cushions for the pool, or if you had just approached either of us at anytime we could have taken care of that for you in 24 hours.

Again, I am happy you found Seahorse Cottages, large, roomy, and quiet. and hope this clarifies some of your concerns.
