Tortuga Beach Club Resort

Reviewed May 14, 2013

A business person on vacation with family selects a place to stay by the connection capabilities. Tortuga promotes itself with free WiFi but couldn't provide it. They actually blamed it on my computer, which operated just fine when I brought it into their office, and on my own network when I returned home.

Every day I checked on status; everyday I received excuses --- never an action plan, never an offer to use a desk in their office, never an adjustment to the bill for services not provided....

They also do nothing to control the behavior of rowdy children in the pool.....

Cindi K, Front Office Manager at Tortuga Beach Club Resort, responded to this reviewResponded May 16, 2013

Dear Steve,

Thank you for taking the time to review Tortuga Beach Club. We value your comments and we take them very personally.

You noted that you had difficulty with your WiFi connection. We initially might assume that the problem was a firewall, or similar, on your individual computer if you were the only one having trouble out of our 54 units. All of our units are serviced by one Router/Modem. Having said that, when you were able to connect to the resort office internet, it should've been a red flag that something else was going on. I apologize for this, but I only wish that you had asked to speak to me, or the manager, if your issue had not been resolved in a timely fashion. We have had very little problems with our internet since we last had it upgraded. We also added internet at the Clubhouse with a different provider in the event that our unit provider (Comcast) is having a problem.

In March and April we usually have quite a few children staying with us. We expect that the parents or grandparents will keep them in line but this isn't always the case. Unfortunately, we do not have a lifeguard. Our social director tries very hard to monitor the pool area as well as cook lunches, serve drinks and help guests with making a craft. She isn't at the Clubhouse the entire day, so we hope that if there is a problem, our guests will go into the Clubhouse and call us on the phone. We would then send a maintenance person down to speak to the children or adult with them. This can all be done anonymously so that the guest doesn't look like the 'bad guy'. We do not know of the problems at the pool unless you let us know.

In the future, I would urge you to notify the staff or management of any problems you are having. We don't want these issues to cause your vacation to be unpleasant. As I mentioned before, we all try to make your vacation WONDERFUL and we take that goal very personally.
Thank you very much for your comments - we value them!

One of the best manicured properties we have visited. Great location and Staff. Rooms are 2 bedroom, 2 bath and very spacious. Great views of the Gulf as property is beach front approximately 50 yards from the beach. There are always innovative daily activities planned for children. We have been staying at Tortuga for the last 4 years and we look forward to returning on an annual basis. We would rate our stay as one of the most relaxing stays we have experienced. Not only is Tortuga a beautiful resort, but the Staff is extremely accommodating.

My In-Laws have had a condo at Tortuga Beach Club for 20 years. We have stayed with them about seven of those 20 years. I have to say that we have found the facility to be first-class. The condos all have two bedrooms (I am pretty sure) and two baths, full kitchens, dining areas, living rooms, and a screened porch facing the pool/gulf. The upper condos have a wonderful open porch off of the master bedroom. The lower condos have steps from the porch down to the ground. Each condo has one parking space under the building. There are other 'guest' spaces scattered around the complex. The condos are always clean and up to date. Tortuga takes very good care of the condos and does regular updating. It is always fun to see what is new when we go. If we have a problem, they are quick to send someone over to fix it. The buildings are in a large horseshoe shape, so some are a little farther from the gulf than others, but none are very far. The outdoor pool is wonderful, with a shallow end and a deep end. They have a large hot tub, a clubhouse where they serve afternoon drinks and have family activities planned (at least in the summer). They have tennis courts and shuffleboard. There are also barbeque huts scattered about to use for your evening meal and several fishing tables to clean off your fish or shells. Outdoor showers and foot showers are nice, as well. The landscaping is beautiful with lovely shell-lined walkways! The beach at Sanibel is known for its shells... there are TONS of shells. The water of the gulf is calm and serene. It is a bit of an expense to take the toll bridge out to the island, but once there, you really don't have to go back and forth. Everything you might need, you can find on the island... post office, grocer, touristy stores, restaurants of all kinds, lighthouse... It is a sweet and wonderful place to stay. Tropical. Beachy. Tortuga Beach Club is one of the nicest!

In March 2013, my wife and I stayed in a 2 bedroom unit on the upper level, unit 126, through a timeshare exchange with Interval International. The resort consists of 8 separate buildings with four lower and four upper units in each building; the buildings are in a U arrangement around the pool with the two end buildings ( Building A --units 101-108 and Building G units149-156) facing the beach directly. The even numbers are for upper level units and the odd numbers for lower level. Both the upper and lower level units are on two floors. The ground floor of each building is parking for cars, one per unit with two extra spaces for compact cars. The living area of the units start one floor up so there are a fair number of stairs; only one building has an elevator if stairs are a problem then this could be an issue. The upper level units have a small balcony/lanai on the fourth level (third floor of living area) which looks out toward the ocean. The units that are in the interior of the U arrangement look out over the pool to the ocean. Our unit No. 126 was in the center of the unit; the view from the upper level lanai had a very good view of the water over the pool. The larger lower level balcony (first floor of unit - third floor of building including ground parking area) had some views of the water out over the very nicely landscaped pool area. The big lanai was a great place to relax, eat meals, etc

The units have a full kitchen with granite countertops, appropriate appliances; there was and good furniture in the living rooms. The two upstairs bedrooms are very large. My one criticism of the bedrooms were that the mattresses were quite soft. My wife was fine with them but I need a relatively firm mattress and these mattresses were not within the range that I found comfortable.

The grounds are very well landscaped. The pool is on the small side but is certainly adequate. We had no problems getting chairs around the pool when we wanted them. Both the pool and hot tub had some recent tile work done around perimeter and were very nice, particularly the hot tub ( the tile work provided a very nice seating area around the hot tub inwhich you could tangle youe legs in while sitting on the edge). The beach is only steps away from the pool and is a very short walk from any unit. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. This timeshare was originally built in the early 1980's and many of the vacationers at this resort have owned a timeshare week or weeks for years at this resort. For a long time, many have been coming year after year to the resort. The resort is managed by Hilton and the current manager of more than 20 years received the "resort manager of the year" from Hilton in the recent past ( in 2011 think; the resort reflects the quality of the management both in upkeep and in friendliness and professionalism of the staff.

Overall, the Tortuga Beach Club provides an excellent, relaxing vacation. We will likely return sometime in the future

Without doubt, the Tortuga Beach Club on Sanibel Island provides the best vacation value we have experienced in our years of travel through Europe and most of the U.S. The 54 units are very well managed. Maintenance requests are fulfilled with unbelievable speed. The staff bends over backwards to accommodate every reasonable request. The furnishings are updated in a timely fashion, and the facility is small enough that we have the feeling it is our home away from home. We enjoy our vacations at the Tortuga Beach Club so much that we no longer want to vacation anywhere else. This is the seventh year we have driven 1,500 miles to enjoy the resort's beautiful and well-maintained grounds, the stellar views it provides of the Gulf of Mexico, the comfort of knowing that the Tortuga staff will do everything they can to make our vacations enjoyable, and the opportunity to renew valued friendships from our previous trips to Tortuga. This resort has our highest recommendation.

Found Tortuga Beach Club while looking through my Interval Resort directory. Tortuga was listed as an Interval Premier resort. Called on short notice (2 months before desired travel date) and was lucky to stumble upon a cancellation for the February week we were looking for. After discussing the facility and and my preferences regarding amenities with Cindi, rented that week on the spot. Cindi was very helpful in keeping me informed regarding the pool maintenance project and offered 3 other pools that we could utilize if Tortuga's pool was not ready when we arrived. That worked out well as 2 of those pool options were on either side of the Tortuga Resort. While there for a great week, Cindi, Janeen, JoAnn (activities director) and Joanne in sales were all very helpful and enjoyable to interact with. We had one very minor maintenace issue which Mike immediately corrected, even though I had indicated "no rush to fix." Everyone working at this fine resort acted as though they really enjoyed their job. My wife and I shared a 2 bedroom/2 bath condo with her sister and husband. Condo was very clean and well appointed. The grounds were very nice and well kept. This is a smaller resort which makes it even nicer. It was very quiet and had nice views of the beach from the upper units. Even though we will be vacationing in another part of Florida next year, we do plan to return to Tortuga Beach Club within a couple of years. Thank you all for making our stay a special one.

Room Tip: Upper level units have a better view of beach, but if stairs are an issue chose (if you can) a lower...
