We had a great stay at Casa Ybel. Rooms are very nice, updated; granite vanities and kitchen counters; travertine floors. Front desk very friendly - encouraged us to look at a few rooms before choosing the one we liked best. All rooms have ocean views and are just steps away from the beach or pool. We were walk-ins and were able to negotiate a bit on the price per room, but it was still pricey. Pool area was exceptionally clean and neat. Staff friendly. Pool bar was expensive ($15 for 2 beers). On site Thistle restaurant was excellent - a very nice benefit.

Sanibel has very few "resorts" (food and drink onsite) and almost all hotels/lodging appear 20+ years old. We had booked at another property originally, which ended up being terrible, and found Casa Ybel while biking around the island. We saw lots of potential hotels and found Casa Ybel to be one of the nicest.

Stayed: March 2007

Stayed here in early February and was surprised at how "grey" everything seemed. Yes, the condos are all grey. But it was more than that... perhaps it was the cool weather; or maybe it was the bar closing at 6pm; or the fact that the towel/bike/cabana rental guy was snoring at his post; or their tiny frayed towels. I never really felt that I was at a "Resort" but rather just another condo complex.

On the plus side, the restaraunt (I never could spell that word... where does the "u" go?) food was delicious. The sunsets were beautiful (although in Winter you cannot see the sunset from the rooms.) The rooms were clean and it was nice to have a fully functioning kitchen for meals. The pool was warm and great for young children.

Either way, I can't see how they justify the high price tag ($300/nite)

Wherever you stay, be sure to try Amy's for breakfast and definitely rent bikes... the place is soooo flat you practically coast everywhere.

We stayed here January 2007. The grounds were in tip top condition as well as the pool area. Towels for the beach and pool were hideous along with the towels provided in the rooms. For the prices that they charge bikes and beach gear should be included. The view of the beach from our room was beautiful but the room itself was not very clean. The floors had not been cleaned since the last people. Certainly can't believe that this is in Travel and Leisure top 500. Not worth the high price!

My wife and I stayed here in early December with our 7 month old daughter and just loved it. The grounds are beautiful and the beach is gorgeous and very uncrowded. The staff is friendly but very unintrusive. To have beach chairs and umbrellas set up on the beach for us each day just took one easy phone call. The room itself was lovely and looked like it had recently been remodeled. Great view of the beach from our living room, and we had a really nice screened-in porch overlooking the water as well. The kitchen was small but fully equipped and really great to have with a baby. We spent one afternoon at the pool, which was also very nice (and great for kids of all ages), and the poolside bar is very convenient. We ate dinner one night at the hotel restaurant. The food was frankly pretty ordinary for a high-end place (though certainly not bad), but the staff was extremely welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere was very nice. We did not use the tennis courts but they looked very good. One of the island's many bike paths go right up to the front door of the hotel, which is also a great amenity. This is not a mega resort with all the activities (and pandemonium) that comes with it. But if that's what you are looking for Sanibel probably isn't the right place anyway. If you are looking for a friendly, serene, relaxing, beautiful place to stay, this is a great choice.

Spent a weekend at this hotel for a wedding and was very under whelmed. Considering the price of the place I would have expected a friendly welcome instead I got a sour faced teenager who was about as happy to help me as I was to see all the kids running around. The suites are perfectly fine but don't expect any resort like amenities…I almost felt like I was at camp with the 2 towel limit for the beach (like I would actually want to keep the threadbare towels for myself) and the extra charges for chairs and umbrellas. If you are looking for a place where you can eat meals in and kids will have a blast this is the place for you but if you are looking for a relaxing resort getaway stay clear!
