“Great location, terrible service”
Reviewed April 7, 2008

The location of Casa Ybel is fantastic, with all of the rooms having an ocean view. The rooms are nice but somewhat standard. My main problem was with the services, or lack thereof. If you go, make sure to book beach chairs in advance because we were told they have 122 rooms (accommodating 4 or more) and only 100 beach chairs! There were a lot of angry customers who didn't reserve in advance and were not given beach chairs and/or umbrellas. Some of the staff were very friendly and helpful but others were surly. The lunch restaurant by the pool is very good, but the dining room dinner is mediocre. We had a very nice vacation overall but just be aware of these problems.

First let me say we LOVE Sanibel. We've been coming for years and have stayed at Point Sand, South Seas & the Sundial (several times). First time at Casa Ybel. The nickel & diming is nothing short of ridiculous. Maid service? That will be $50. Fresh towels? That will be $10. Chairs & umbrellas for the beach? That's $175 for the week. Oh and by the way, they don't even have enough chairs & umbrellas to meet demand during peak season. We come for the beach and we can't even sit there because we can't get beach shade when we need it. Nor do they have enough clean towels during peak swimming pool hours. Service at times was great (hair braider, english-speaking attendants and all bar staff was wonderful) and at times was just awful and uncaring - language barrier is never a problem, unless there is a general laziness and attitude that comes with it, which it does from the non-English speakers who work here. For a premier resort, this is really just a let down and we will never return. Our plan was to go back to Sundial which we loved, but apparently that now has been bought up by the Blackstone Group who has bought multiple properties on the island and creating poorer service and this kind of nickel & diming across the board.

We spent a week at Casa Ybel and were very satisfied while there. This is a beautiful place with an excellent location on Sanibel Island. We were pleasantly surprised to receive an upgrade to a 2 bedroom unit upon arrival. Our condo was immaculate and very comfortable. The only complaint is the extra charge for beach chairs and umbrellas on the beach. At a beachfront resort this should not be considered an extra!

We had dinner at The Island Cow one night, but it was pretty ordinary and I wouldn't recommend it. Mc T's Shrimp House was a little better. The best meals we had were at Timbers Restaurant and Cheeburger Cheeburger - great shakes!

There's not a whole lot to do on Sanibel, besides collecting shells, but it can be a really relaxing vacation and a great place to take the kids.

I have been visiting Sanibel Island and staying at Casa Ybel for 18 years. My grandparents own a timeshare at Casa Ybel and I cannot express how many great times I have had here.

When I was younger, the Kids club was just amazing. And although I heard it is a tad overpriced, your kids will have a great time; even if you send them just once. The Thistle Lodge is also very expensive, but it's not necessary to eat there. There are plenty of other restaurants on the island to eat at.

THe shelling on this beach is indescribable. I have been to beaches from California, Jamaica, and Mexico...and NOTHING compares to Sanibel Island. And although the island has not looked the same since Katrina, they are working very hard in achieving the same look again. Also, though the sunsets are beautiful here, I would venture up to Captiva Island one night for their stellar sunsets.

The resort itself is beautiful, clean, and top-notch. Kitchens are stocked with all the gadgets you would need. There are plenty of plates, glasses, cookware, etc. Bathrooms are of perfect size, even with a medicine cabinet to keep everything off the sink. Bedrooms are of great size and there is a ton of closet space. Only one gripe I would have about the bedrooms is that there are not enough hangers supplied for you.

I might be a little impartial, but I think this resort is fantastic. Casa Ybel is full of friendly people and great staff. I hope to get married here someday as well....

We just returned to Minnesota from an awesome stay at Casa Ybel Resort. Found the staff to be very friendly and attentive. The grounds were beautiful and well kept. The food was absolutely five star.

We enjoyed the privacy of the beach - walked the beach every morning and evening - shelling of course! We will miss the beach while we continue to live in Minnesota for now.

We spent some time at the pool - large pool - great for kids and adults. Excellent for swimming laps later in the day. Water temperature was very comfortable. Lots of lounge chairs at poolside to accomodate everyone. The Coconuts bar at poolside mixed as good a drink as anywhere we have been. Food at poolside was also very good - selection was above average. Staff at poolside again - very attentive and fun.

The nice touches - hammocks around the grounds to just relax in whenever you wanted - shelling stations to clean the shells we found on the beach - the shuffleboard- the outdoor grills for our use if we wanted - the laundry if we needed it - the walking paths. Beautiful place to get away from the real world.

Our condo was very comfortable - the bed - the linens - the towels - the furniture. We had everything we needed or even wanted. From a perfect view of the Gulf to the morning paper outside our door.

After a great night of sleep we could not have enjoyed bettter days anywhere!

We would recommend Casa Ybel for anyone that needs or wants to be pampered and treated perfectly. This is a resort that can be enjoyed by all ages! It was sooooooooo hard to leave and return to the real world.

We would like to thank the entire staff as Casa Ybel for making our stay with you one that we will remember! We were truly treated like your guests! We will be back.

Our family of 5 just returned from a 7 day stay at the resort. The location is great, but if you're looking for a sunset view, you won't get it there. Shells on beach incredible! But, this resort is way over priced for what you get. All the amenities are extra, even most of the Kids's club activities cost something. The rooms are NOT 5 Star. Maybe 3. The housekeeping services were fair at best. My daughter and I woke up with tiny itching "flee?" bites all over our ankles (we bathed before bed), still trying to figure out what they are. Half of the laundry facilities (coin-operated) either did not work or were broken. I had to clean them myself. I called to have them looked at and after 5 days they still were not taken care of (I ended up using the free machines that are dedicated for the time shares). We paid over $400/night plus taxes for a 1 bedroom suite, which is way over priced in our opinion. Very little dresser space. Hard to find a place to put food. Beds extremely incomfortable. Worth half the price. Accomodations look like lodges. When we first arrived they were going to put us on the 3rd floor with no elevator and I requested 1st floor which was convenient to beach. Staff friendly. Would NOT go back.

Family of five just stayed at Casa Ybel. We expected it to be good because we were paying a high nightly price. It didn't disappoint. We had a 2 bedroom condo. It was spotless, and updated. No worn or stained furnishings, no spots on carpet. We had a large living area with pull-out sofa, upstairs was a bedroom with twin beds and bathroom, a master bedroom and bath was on the main floor. The view out the back was great. Dining table for 6, enclosed lanai with table and chairs and lounger. Pool area was nice, bar right there. Beach was like having your own private beach. We ate at Thistles (their restaurant) for lunch once and dinner twice. Topnotch. We would highly recommend this to others (and I'm picky).
