“Will Definitely Stay at Casa Ybel Again”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

My family has been coming to Sanibel for the last 12 years. We have stayed at many of the condos on the island, but never a resort. We have always driven by Casa Ybel and thought is was a beautiful property so we decided to stay there for a long weekend. The landscaping is gorgeous and the property is very well maintained. The accomodations were upscale and very comfortable. The pool and beach area are very nice. I loved the way they handled beach chair rentals. You pay upfront for the number of days you need beach chairs and they are set up on the beach in front of your condo by 9:00am each morning with a tag that reads "Reserved for Room ***" It always stresses me out to think a resort will run out of beach chairs. No worries here. We ate at Coconuts twice. The food is very good and the poolside service was very fast. This resort is geared toward families with children of all ages. There were many many many children. So if you are looking for a couples only environment, this may not be appealing. Overall a very nice place to stay and will definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with steps leading to the beach from your screen porch. Very nice getting to the bea...

I paid a visit to Sanibel for the first time along with my Aunt. She and I are very into shelling and have hunted shells all over the world. For shells Sanibel is amazing. Other than that we'll keep traveling to other destinations. Casa y bel was not at all what we expected. First off we discovered there is no breakfast!!! How can you call yourself a "resort" and you don't even serve a continental breakfast. This immediately made us realize we needed to rent a car and did so by spending half of a day getting this accomplished. The resort is perfect for families with young children and it caters to this. This creates a lot of noise throughout the resort with constant screaming of children during our times of relaxation. I wouldn't consider this resort for those looking for peace and quiet. What also disturbed me was the beach towel and chair situation. You have to walk to the pool desk to get beach towels and then make sure you return them or you'll be charged. A nuisance when you just want to relax. Also, no beach chairs???!!!!! You have to pay for a full day use just to have a beach chair. We only wanted them for a few hours not an entire day!! Again, a nuisance and complete obsurdity.

We recently spent some time at Casa Ybel and while there spent time at the pool bar "COCONUTS". They have great service - friendly service - accomodating staff - great food and a nice selection - fun entertainment - and of course some great drinks. Everyone was friendly, helpful and always cheerful. Friends met us there on a couple of days and they too loved it - they went back without us!

We had a great time and cannot wait to go back - looking for airfare so we can return in the next few weeks- in need of some serious sunshine and of course time at Coconuts and Casa Ybel.

Room Tip: All rooms have a view of the beach - all very comfortable and clean.

My family and I went to Casa Ybel and loved the room, beach, and pool. We also loved the beach view from our room, too. The pricing is expensive, but I think it is worth it. You can play shuffle board and volleyball. We love eating dinner at the Thistle Lodge as well. We love to come to Casa Ybel every trip.

We just returned from a visit to Casa Ybel in Sanibel Island, FL. First - the good. The beach is beautiful, and the view from each one bedroom unit is flawless. The meals at the pool bar and the restaurant were very good, but very expensive.

The problem with Casa Ybel is the value for your money. The smallish one bedroom was almost $600 per night when you include taxes. Included in that price was maid service - period. Beach towels were also included, but you were limited to one per person which you checked out of the pool towel stand with a card that you paid $20 for if you lost it. Beach chairs were $20 per day per person (none were available the entire time we were there), bikes were extra (none were avialable the entire time we were there), and if you tried to swap out your beach towel for a clean one - they were generally not available (we had the same towels for four days). The service is about on par with a youth hostel.

There is no food available prior to 12:00pm and after 9:00pm. We didn't have a car, so when we were told we couldn't rent bikes either - we were basically stranded. A kind cab driver finally took me to bikes - the front desk was not willing to help me with any of my issues.

When we arrived on the ferry from Key West, it was 10:30pm - no food. They knew we had five people in our party, but did not make up the sofa bed. When I requested sheets, their first response was "do you really need them right now?" Ugh.

I met a member of the board at Casa Ybel who explained to me that the timeshare owners vote in their best interests - not the interests of the hotel guests. I wish I had known the lay of the land prior to speding the money on this "resort".

The island is really nice - 50miles of bike trails. We had very good dinners at the Greenhouse and the Twilight Cafe. I would recommend the island - but I would rent a condo or stay on Captiva - do not go to Casa Ybel!

Thank you for taking the time to review Casa Ybel Resort and your island experience. We're glad you enjoyed Sanibel and found our beach beautiful, our food offerings good and the view from your newly furnished One Bedroom Beachfront Suite flawless. Island rates vary by season, we apologize for our limited availability of beach furniture, bikes and pool towels. We exhausted our supplies and reserves during the extremely busy two week period. We have since increased our inventories and will continue to recommend that guests reserve these items in advance with their confirmation. We also offer alternative referrals for bike rental if necessary. We hope you'll reconsider Casa Ybel and recommend a Two Bedroom Beachfront Suite for your party of five. With best regards, -Team Casa Ybel.

Just got back last night from a 5 night stay at this resort. I am only giving it a rating of 3 based on several things. At $600/night it was waaaaayyyyyy overpriced--this was for a 1 bedroom unit--and I can't imagine what they were charging for 2 bedrooms. The room was nice enough--full kitchen, two bathroom sinks, screened in porch, comfortable beds -- but for the price I expected a 5 star resort. Actually, everything in Sanibel/Captiva is extremely expensive, so come prepared to spend a lot of money. The entire resort is dated - be aware there are no elevators here, so not sure how someone who could not climb stairs would stay here. There is a pool bar/restaurant (Coconuts), which was nice, and we enjoyed several lunches which were quite good. There is also a charge to "rent" chairs to use on the beach. There were 3 of us and it cost us $40/day to rent 3 lounge chairs. Really?? For $600/night I was shocked we were charged for this.

There are some good things about this resort - all rooms are oceanfront, which was nice, and the location is good. The rooms were cleaned every day, sometimes not until later in the day, but that did not bother us as we did not get back to the room until after 5:00 or 6:00 anyway. There are several grocery stores close by (hotel does not offer any breakfast options) if you'd rather make your own breakfast than go out. There are also several grill areas if you'd rather grill steaks, seafood, etc. I saw several people doing that--probably got tired of spending a small fortune going out to dinner. The resort grounds are very beautiful and well maintained.

The meals we had at Mucky Duck, Jacaranda, Green Flash and Grandma Dots were about the quality of Applebee's/TGIF--maybe a little more. We went to the Bubble Room in Captiva for desert but found they charge $5.50/person fee to sit at a table - so we would have spent $16.50 just to sit at a table inside the restaurant to have desert. Recommend taking it to go if all you are having is desert--they do not charge a fee if you have dinner.

Bottom line is I do not mind spending money if I get quality along with it, which we did not. From the meals to the accommodations, everything was extremely overpriced and we won't be returning to this area again.

This place is beautiful - lovely wooden condos with lots of space set in beautiful gardens right on the beach.

I think each property is privately owned so each has it's own unique decor and is in varying states of repair.

We arrived without a reservation after leaving the terrible Sundial resort. We viewed a double bedroomed property and the furniture and decor was just not us. Its worth pointing out that we are particularly fussy and like modern, uncluttered environments. We then viewed room 105 a singled bedroom property and it was much better. We got a slight discount but still paid $460 per night plus tax which is expensive. That said we had plenty of space, a well equiped kitchen with an island, large living area and balcony and our daughter loved it.

There is very little service, the towel attendant, cafe etc opened when someone turned up. Everyone seemed to simply except this laid back approach. I went to the reception to ask where I could get some coffee from and the girl in the office said she was just about to make one and she'll make me one too! It's not something I would usually tolerate but I found myself shrugging my shoulders and saying why not?!

You need your own provisions as breakfast isn't available (cycle to the old lighthouse to see the sunrise and have breakfast at the lighthouse cafe instead) and there is limited lunch and dining options. Most people seem to go out or cook themselves as there are also BBQ stations available throughout the complex.

Sanibel is different, it's active in a relaxing kind of way. Everyone is riding around on bikes, walking, shelling, watching the beautiful sunsets or the sunrises - in a word it's about enjoying the simple things.

We loved it and we certainly felt more relaxed leaving than arriving. It wasn't worth the money but everywhere on Sanibel is expensive and the island itself is a great spot to get back to basics and
chill out.
