My wife and I stayed at this hotel from 31st August until 3rd September 2012. We arrived early for check in but our room was ready and we went straight in. The room was of an adequate size and the bed was very large. The ensuite bathroom was well fitted out and the whole accommodation was very clean and well presented. The island would appear to have a lot of flying insects as all the balconies were totally enclosed by a fine wire mesh which rather spoilt the views of the hotel pool and the sea. However, that is probably preferrable to being bitten endless times during the night! The pool and its surrounding area were very pleasant and immaculately clean with the water being at bath temperature. The lovely beach was just a short walk from the pool area and is a shell collectors paradise. The poolside bar served both drinks and a good selection of food until 8pm but after that it was not possible to buy alcohol anywhere in the hotel which I found a little odd. I asked where the nearest place to get a drink after 8pm was and was told to try another hotel about a mile up the road. So if you want a late evening drink either buy cans from the shops or be prepared to walk up the road a bit. All in all we had a wonderful stay in this hotel and I would certainly stop there again and will recommend it to friends and family. However, as a facilities and health & safety professional, there are two things that I feel are worth mentioning. Firstly.... the air conditioning units for the rooms vent directly out onto the balconies which sometimes made sitting outside unbearable without turning the units off. This meant that we could not sit out on the balcony whilst at the same time keeping the room cool. Secondly....there were clear notices around the pool informing people that no food or beverages should be taken in the pool and that no bottles or glasses should be taken to the pool area. However, on several occassions, we saw people walking around in the pool with cans and even bottles of beer in their hands. The hazards presented by broken glass entering the pool are obvious to everyone so it is of little use displaying signs unless the rules are enforced.

It was good having you with us. You are right about "insects". They are called "no-see-ums" and when they are active they even can get through the screen unless there is sufficient air pressure to keep them out. There is not much to do about them except buy some repellent. We aerglad yoiu enjoyed your stay and look forward to your return some time.

We were scheduled for 3 nights during the weekend of tropical storm Isaac. We were able to stay two of the 3 nights. The pool was huge and very clean. The beach was great with lots of shells. We enjoyed the small screened in porch looking out to the ocean and the beautiful grounds. Even though we had to check out early because of the weather the manager was very understanding and refunded the last night. We will definitely be back.

We stayed at the Westwind from August 13 thru 16 ~ We had a wonderful stay, room was clean, somewhat modern, new bath, etc., and had an ocean/pool view. Had breakfast one day and lunch at the pool with bar cocktails ~ food was excellent at both restaurant and pool and pool service was wonderful! On the day of departure, I left my two swimsuits and coverup hanging behind the bathroom door ~ I called later that day and Candi immediately returned my call, saying that they had found my missing suits and would mail them to my home! Great vacation in a family friendly hotel . . love Sanibel and Captiva and we will be back!

I have been going to The West Wind for as long as I can remember, it is a family tradition. The beaches nearby are fantastic especially for shelling (walk to the right along the water), the pool is great with occasional live music, the rooms are fairly clean, the surroundings are calm and tranquil with bike paths and small shops, and the staff is helpful.
