“A great place to stay”
Reviewed April 3, 2007

We had a great stay in this hotel. We stayed in a beachfront room which gave us a great view and provided a nice breeze. The beach is beautiful, the pool was very nice, although there was a better breeze on the beach. The continental breakfast was fine, but we did get tired of the same offerings every day, so we went out for breakfast quite a few times. There are plenty of places to choose from if you do go out for breakfast. We also chose to eat in our room
a couple of nights and the resort was very accommodating with plates and cutlery. The rooms were very clean and well-equipped. Would highly recommend this hotel.

  • Liked — The sound of the waves at night.
  • Disliked — The bathtub wasn't high enough for a relaxing bubble bath.

My family just arrived home from a fantastic week at the Sanibel Inn. The room was clean and nicely updated. We enjoyed hearing the ocean from our room at night. The staff was very friendly. We really enjoyed the complimentry bikes and the breakfast-despite other comments was what we expected-continental. We enjoyed the slower pace of this hotel. We did take our children down to the Sundial and the pool area was crazy! They do need more stafff to help at the beach desk. It was only staffed by one man every day and the morning was pretty busy with umbrella and bike check outs. Overall we will be back! The location was perfect as well! Highly recomended.

This hotel is in a great location, very quiet and relaxing. We had a basic room with 2 queen beds, microwave and fridge, lovely screened in porch with ocean view.

The basic continental breakfast is convenient, but unfriendly morning staff at Ellington's made dining there an unpleasant experience. Grab some coffee, fruit and bagels to go.

Housekeeping came to the room every day to make the beds and replace the towels. Floors were not vacuumed or swept. Four days into our one-week stay, I called the front desk to ask for replacements of the shampoo and coffee for the in-room coffeemaker, as they had not been replaced since we arrived. Moments later, an employee knocked at the door with a bag of several days' worth of coffee and toiletries. We appreciated the quick response - but later that day, housekeeping came to make the beds and removed all of the toiletries, and most of the coffee! Left one day's worth of coffee, but no cups. No replacements were provided the next day, or for the rest of our stay. This bizarre episode left us with a bad feeling. Why would a nice hotel be so stingy with service items?

Front desk staff are pleasant and informative. The pool area is great, and we loved the free bikes. Bike paths take you all over the island, and it is level so even a young child can keep up. We used our passes to go to the larger Sundial hotel for tennis lessons and to visit their pool. Sundial has great activities for kids, which guests of Sanibel Inn may use. Sundial's pool area gets quite crowded though - come back to the Sanibel Inn to relax at the laid-back poolside bar instead.

This was our third visit to this hotel in as many years. We have seen a gradual decline in the cleanliness of the rooms. To be specific, the outdoor furniture was dirty and uncomfortable, the carpets were terribly stained and there was mildew in the shower. For the price we paid ( around $400 per night) we would have expected more. The included breakfast was truly not worth eating. First of all, the setting is dark - the breakfast room is a jazz club and restaurant at night and the last place one wishes to go on a sunny Florida morning. The selection of food-dry pastries, weak coffee and a few boiled eggs left us without an appetite. On top of this, the staff that works the breakfast room is less than friendly. Of no fault of the hotel was the noxious presence of a red tide which had everybody on the beach coughing and made the idea of a swim amore than a little scary. Provided the local authorities can get this problem under control, we will return to Sanibel/Captiva again but won't stay at The Sanibel Inn.

Checked in around 4PM by friendly staff. We booked a 1bdrm ocean front room which included a pull out couch in the living room and a small kitchenette. Our room was clean and had a perfect ocean front view, recently renovated all as advertised. The pool and activity shed were a quick walk from our room we used the services daily, the staff was helpful. Every morning, the NY Times at our doorstep. The complimentary breakfast was onsite at their restaurant which had quite a limited menu unless you are carbo loading for a marathon! But hey your there for the view Not the food. The only real downside to our trip was the red algae which was all over the beach. This unfortunately is not the resorts fault but you would be well advised to contact the chamber of commerce before booking a trip to Sanibel or Captiva. During our trip, the red algae had been on the beach for 3 weeks. Its a real problem for the condo associations and hotels as it is starting (any rightfully so) to affect tourism. A number of proposals have been floated to solve the problem but nothing solid yet. The local paper reported that the week prior to our arrival 6,000 bags of algae had been removed from the beach. Regardless, the smell of rotting algae in the hot Florida sun was nauseating. We paid about $340/night which seemed high for the small accommodations but when you realize 2bdrm o.front condo's cost over a million.I guess it was in line. But the stink was really a bummer! Sanibel Inn had no organized kids events but were quite welcoming to children. They partner with a number of other resorts like the Sundial which has extensive kids activities scheduled throughout the day. Most probably Sundial would be a better choice for a family with kids 4 and older. Overall, we had a decent stay, next time we would make sure the beaches are in top shape.

We stayed at the Sanibel Inn Feb 24-27 and had a great time. My husband and I had an oceanfront room and were very happy with it. The room was spacious and very clean. There were extra touches (such as a microwave and a DVD player) that we didn't use but other folks might find helpful. We did use the refrigerator and the screened porch. The porch was very private and we could leave the door open, lay in bed and listen to the sound of the waves on the shore. We also had drinks out there in the afternoon and coffee in the morning. I'm not sure why folks complain about the continental breakfast - it was well run and included bagels, toast, various pastries, cereals, hard boiled eggs along with coffee and juice. The loaner bikes were great we didn't have any problems with traffic or hotel location. Yes, there was algae on the beach but that seems to be luck of the draw - it was much less of a problem the day we left. The ocean water was cold anyway but the pool at the hotel was heated and very inviting. We biked up to the public Lighthouse beach and discovered it had no algae. My biggest complain was we planned to short a stay - next year we're going for a week.

This is a very nice middle-of-the-road hotel. The staff was friendly, the room was clean and spacious, and the inn sits in a good location for getting around Sanibel. The bathroom was very spacious with a full -length granite countertop, providing plenty of room for toiletries. There was no door separating the sink area from the toilet/shower area which was a mild nuisance. The in-room refridgerator was very useful. Parking was free, as well as the use of tennis racquets/balls (not the best quality), bicycles, and continental breakfast. The breakfast is served at Ellington's, the on-site jazz restaurant, and provided a very pleasant setting. The available food consisted of three different cereals, hard-boiled eggs, bagels, assorted pastries, mini muffins, waffles, oatmeal, fruit, juice, milk, coffee, etc. It was very adequate for my husband and me. However, we did eat at Amy's for breakfast on our last day and both highly recommend it. The food, service and prices were great.

Sanibel Inn is not a huge inn and somewhat secluded which added to the peace and quiet. The pool area is very nice, and the pool is heated. The grounds were pretty, though we never saw any butterflies in the Butterfly Garden. It was a very short walk to the beach. When we went in mid-February, there was Red Drift Algae on the beach which had an unpleasant odor
and wasn't very pretty to look at. Plus, you had to walk over it to get to the water. However, this was not true when we visited Captiva Island during our stay, and both islands had plenty of shells to choose from.

Overall, we were very pleased with our stay at Sanibel Inn. It provided for a great romantic get-away. We would definitely stay there again, but if we took the kids, we might choose a larger resort with more activities.

  • Liked — The quiet secluded atmosphere
  • Disliked — The price. Comparatively speaking, it was fine, but all those places are over-priced.
