My husband and 2 kids (ages 2 and 5) and I stayed 5 nights in early February. It was our first time on Sanibel Island. We booked a spacious 2 bedroom/2 bath condo with full kitchen. We cooked dinner 2 nights and the kitchen was well equipped. We were self sufficient, but found the staff friendly and attentive when we needed them. The hotel had a small to mid-sized heated pool, direct access to a beautiful beach, pool and sand toys (although we did buy some at the Super Target after arriving in Ft. Meyers), complimentary bikes complete with child seats, trailer bikes, etc, and beach chairs and towels.

Some folks had negative comments about the complimentary continental breakfast. However, I found it worked well for us - 3 different kinds cereal (the kids loved the Lucky Charms), bagels, waffles, danish, instant oatmeal, hard boiled eggs. Apples and oranges to take as snacks. Perfectly adequate, not luxurious, and not a problem.

The Sanibel Inn did offer some children's programs throughout the day and each had a separate charge. (e.g. make a shell picture frame for $12.00). The kids weren't interested and basically went back and forth between building sand castles and playing in the pool - it was hard to motivate them to explore the other beautiful parts of Sanibel Island! Overall, a terrific vacation and we plan to stay at the Sanibel Inn next year.

Just returned from Sanibel and a short stay (4nts) at the Sanibel Inn. The web site does a good job of describing the property. We stayed in a pool and palms guest room on the second floor. We had a beautiful view of the ocean, even though they don't advertise it. Worked for us! The view was lovely. The room was comfortable, but I don't think I would call the bedding plush. The furnishings were above average, but the carpet has some spots and the room had a really musty smell. It was still nice, but I thought the room was a bit pricey. The free cont. breakfast (average) and bikes were a bonus. I would stay there again.

This hotel is just beautiful! The grounds are well kept, including a few butterfly gardens and lots of colorful flowers and interesting palm trees. You can rent a bike for free. It's right on the beach so you can go and pick up shells. Just watch out for attacking seaguls - my husband and I tried to walk onto the beach and the birds kept flying right on top of our heads. On the third try we had to just run through and then they eventually stopped following us - I guess they get fed alot. I wouldn't suggest swimming in the water as it does smell very very fishy. But you can get lots of little shells, go for a walk or a jog, or just sit on one of the free lounge chairs. We got a room overlooking the water and got to see the sunrise each morning. The rooms were very spacious and clean. The beds very comfy and the bathrooms well kept. The service was great. Ellington's is really neat, though room service VERY expensive. we took advantage of the continental breakfast each morning to save money but there's not much there to eat. Two restaurants we highly recommend - the Lighthouse Cafe (great breakfast and great prices, really cool atmosphere) and Traders (awesome food, great ambiance and reasonably priced. Sanibel is a great place to just relax - not much else to do around there, however.

My wife & enjoyed the stay even though it was too short. The outside Tiki Bar was awesome and made some fantastic Pina Colada's. Room was great, clean & big. Our only gripe was the restaurant on the property which was a Jazz Bar at night. In the morning however they serve a complimentary continental breakfast for guests of the property. The nazi hostest at the entrance to the restaurant made a HUGE scene when my wife walked up to get her cup of coffee, accusing my wife of being somebody off the street.(oh yeah, a lot of street walkers with a $7 toll just to get on the island) Anyhow, everybody in the restaurant stopped eating to see who the hostest was yelling at. I took the opportunity to further escalate the comedy by claiming "I've never seen that woman before" after she showed the hostest where we were sitting. Everybody had a good laugh except for the hostess who stated she "Hated her job and was only there because the hotel required it."

We'll stay here again but take the short drive to Cracker Barrel on the mainland next time.

Checked in on 12/21/2006. Reserved a ocean view suite.
When we went to our room, there was a large palm tree blocking our view, went to the front desk and they moved us to a beach front suite. Get the suite, it has a living room and a bedroom, small fridge, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. It's was nice to have two seperate rooms, you can have a privacy when with people. We were just steps away from the beach. It was a quiet hotel, we missed the season by a week.
The staff was friendly and eager to help. We decieded not to rent a car, caught a cab from the airport ($56 plus tip) and rode bikes everywhere. There are bikes paths that will get you anywhere on the island.
It was nice not having to drive. It makes you slow down even more. If you are looking for action, don't go. If you want to slow down and relax, GO!
We would go back to the Sanibel Inn.

Six nights, all were great. We loved the hotel. It was clean, well taken care of, maid service was great. We opted for ocean view, second floor, and were quite pleased. Great privacy. We missed the winter rush by a week or two, for which we were quite grateful. The island is small, and twice as many people may have been a few too many : ) The hotel offers a VERY basic breakfast, which we could not eat every single day ~ we needed a bit more protein. It would have been nice (hint, hint) to add a bit more variety: different types of bagels? english muffins, maybe? Rotating cereals? A second type of juice? Oh well, that was the least of our problems! Deciding where to eat lunch and/or dinner was a much more challenging decision to make every day. We could easily have stayed for 10 days, and will more than likely return to do so. We loved Traders restuarant quite a bit, and actually contemplated going there twice. Also fell in love with the coffee at Sanibel Bean : ) Service staff all over the island were great ~ they were all very welcoming and happy to see us. Don't go here if you're looking for a lot of action ~ we found the slow pace perfect for R&R. Just what we were looking for! P.S. We almost didn't go to the Ding Wildlife Preserve, but are VERY glad that we did. It is lovely, quiet, beautiful and quite fascinating. We wish we'd actually planned more time for the excursion.

We've just returned from a 2 night stay Oct. 13-15. The striking thing about Sanibel is that it is quiet! This is not a big nightlife type of island. The natural beauty of the place is wonderful. The Ding Darling NWR is a must see. I think it is a great place for families. We enjoyed eating at the Mucky Duck(on Captiva) and especially the Island Cow . Mc T's was ok but not great. The Sanibel Inn was very enjoyable. The staff were all very nice. The rooms were great! Like others, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the less expensive pool view rooms also afforded a view of the gulf! The room itself was tastefully decorated with bamboo foyer and berber carpet. The beds and bedding and the room darkening curtains afforded an excellent night's sleep. The mini-fridge and microwave are always appreciated at a beach hotel. The pool was very clean and never very crowded. The free use of the bikes was a wonderful experience. The towels and beach chairs were readily available. The stretch of beach in front of the hotel was very nice. The DVD player was nice as we brought movies from home to watch at night. Now for the very few cons- the continental breakfast was not that great( limited selection-cereal but not any that kids like, bagels, waffles, raisin toast, oatmeal, danish, coffee, tea, oj and water) but it was adequate (we are not big breakfast fans)and free! The other thing was the pool bar. The bartender was very friendly but the drinks were not very good. The top shelf liquors are displayed but not used to make the drinks at this bar. If you stick to beer or wine you are ok but you can just bring your own to the pool and save the expense. These very minor things may not be important to you and certainly would not stop me from staying here again! Overall, the experience was very pleasant!
