Owner description: Established in 1945, this wildlife refuge occupies one-third of Sanibel Island and is a prime spot for birdwatching. Fees are required for Wildlife Drive. Wildlife Drive is closed on Fridays. There's an extensive and informative FREE visitor center, a fantastic wildlife drive, tram tours, kayaking, fishing opportunities, picnic benches, and even a free scavenger hunt style game and wildlife spotting app (Discover Ding) if you prefer a self-guided tour.

“Nice birds watching refuge”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

Nice attraction on Sanibel Island. Take your car, or rent a bike and go slowly from post to post along the four miles, watching wildlife, mostly birds on these refuge.
This attraction is second only to Everglades.
Admission is $5 for a car and $1 for a bike or by foot.
The Sanibel island is for itself a very nice place and I would recommend staying there and enjoying it.

“Fabulous Birding- accessible for all”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

This is one of the best places we have ever been for birding.
There are free guided drives (you drive your own car through
the loop drive) a couple of times a week, and many locals
have spotting scopes set up at the main "hot spots." You pay a small entrance fee per vehicle, or show your Golden Pass for free entry if you have one.

“Best part of Sanibel”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

At low tide - drive, walk or bike on the roads and paths accessible at the main entrance of the park. The birds are amazing, especially the roseate spoonbills. At high tide, kayak at Tarpon Bay at the end of Tarpon Bay Road - there are trails through the mangroves, or just paddle around in the bay. It is easy kayaking. We even saw a bald eagle at the entrance to the kayak trails!

“Disney for bird lovers!”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

Ding Darling allows for complete immersion into finding that elusive bird you have never heard of but are grateful to have found. We are amateurs and have visited this wildlife refuge at least 7 times during three visits to Sanibel. We took a tour with an expert volunteer learning much and seeing more than expected. This is a must for everyone visiting Sanibel.
