Traffic can be heavy (it is, afterall, the mainstreet of the island, with most of the island's shops spread out along it), but you know you are on an island. Lots of little areas for resting or walking along the edges of sanctuaries of various sorts. Best thing: the forethought of the City in building those lovely bike ways from the San-Cap Rd all the way the the Lighthouse.

Periwinkle Way is one of the main roads on the island. Along the road you will find some lodging, restaurants, and shopping. Some intersections along the Way are busy. At different hours of the days it is a busy traveled road. Bike paths run along Periwinkle Way in which you MUST stop for them if they are in crosswalks. However, not everyone stops. Fine is $80, but didn't see that enforced as cars flew past us.

Periwinkle Way has great bike paths that allow bike riders to avoid the often heavy in-season traffic. A joy on Sanibel is the lack of high speed roads and traffic lights, but it translates into heavy traffic during the season. Left turns can be impossible. Consider taking Middle Gulf drive instead if you're not in a hurry. But on Periwinkle you'll find good restaurants, resort shopping, and a sense of the island.

what a treat to have no stoplights. the pedestrians have the right away, the bicycles, have right away, and the cyclists, have their own paved bicycle pathways and not on the main road.
