Yes there are numerous cute shops. Yes they all offer beach oriented gifts. Yes, it is expensive on Sanibel, the $6 fee you pay when you go over the main bridge is a great deterrent in keeping you there. I know, vacations are expensive.
To add to the usual malaise of shopping, Periwinkle Way is bumper to bumper traffic. And I don't think it improves till after Easter, at least that's what on local told us. We were very disappointed that every time we ventured out we were greeted by cars and more cars.
Sanibel needs to re-impliment their public transportation system. Maybe a trolly or tram that tourist can purchase day passes for. Or buses with day passes.
Too many cars.

If shopping is your flavor and you are on Sanible, then this is where you will want to be. Lots of fun things to look at and spend hours getting lost in the local flavor.

The last thing you want to do on vacation is shop, but there are lots of very nice little stores to visit. Lots of shell oriented figures and things for the house. A pleasant evening outing.

This is a main hub on Sanibel Island. Lots of shops, places to eat and the bike path runs down Periwinkle Way. If you have younger children you need to watch for traffic turning in and out of all the businesses.

Periwinkle Way is quaint, rambling through Sanibel past residential and commercial areas. There are 2 lanes (one each way) so traffic can get tight. Be patient; folks were pretty nice about letting us into the traffic flow. No traffic lights but stop signs and police officers directing traffic at rush hour times.
