“Excellent value for beachfront”

We enjoyed the location of this hotel. Liked the continental breakfast served daily in the lobby. Rooms were clean and very spacious. Grounds were very well maintained. Will put this on the return to list.

Room Tip: Request a room on the second floor for more of a view.

We were very disappointed with the cleanliness and upkeep of this facility. Our room smelled like mildew and wasn't cleaned well (lots of hairs, cobwebs, etc.). Overall biggest disappointment was when we weren't able to get a new room and decided to stay somewhere else.

This hotel is perfectly located for those who like to walk to restaurants and things to do. It is just over a two mile walk to the park, a great breakfast spot (Over Easy Cafe), a movie theater, and misc. shopping. There are free bicycles to use. The beachfront is great - quiet, uncrowded, chairs and umbrellas, shelling. The pool area is very nice. Our room overlooked the tennis courts, we could see the ocean from our screened patio. The room is pleasant - could use a little touch up paint. We were on the second floor - there is a lower, mostly below ground level I would not want to stay in - also some strange offset rooms. On the negative side - the front desk staff was not friendly. The breakfast area was uninviting.

Room Tip: We liked the second floor with a view of the tennis courts - would request it again. Do not see an...

We have stayed here several times before and thought it was pleasant and a good deal. We have always booked the cheapest room and always been given a garden view room. There are seven overflow rooms that are described as not ocean view or garden view. What this means is two are located in the service block, which is offset into the parking lot, and five are in the basement with small ground level rooms.
If the hotel were honest about these rooms they would have a difficult time booking them. I have included pictures of these rooms to warn unsuspecting travellers. If you get placed in an ocean view or garden view room you would have a pleasant, well priced stay, but would you want to deal with a company capable of this level of deception? These five overflow rooms are beyond reasonable standards and are only suitable as storage, service or laundry rooms.

Room Tip: Make sure you are not booked in the basement or block in the parking lot.

My boyfriend and I spent some time in this property's sister hotel, Song of the Sea, a couple of years ago. We enjoyed that, so we thought we'd try a different one of LXR's Sanibel properties. I booked this too late to get a beachfront room, but our view was still good...just not panoramic and right on the water (life is so hard!). When we checked out, we were pleasantly surprised to find that they had put us on their "Generations" program for repeat customers - 10% off the room rate.

Our room looked out at the pool, but it never got loud enough to be a problem. The decor was nice and reasonably updated, but carpet/doors/walls could use a thorough cleaning. Some of the small details were off - our bathroom trashcan said Best Western on it (?). Beds were comfortable, and the view from the bed closest to the patio if you open the curtain is really nice...would be even better on 2nd floor.

We liked staying on West Gulf, as it seemed less busy than the other hotels we have stayed at on East Gulf, and you look out at the expansive Gulf, rather than being able to see Fort Myers Beach. The hotel is certainly named appropriately - the sunset is amazing...another reason to get one of the beachfront rooms!

As far as issues we had during our 3 night stay...probably the biggest was that the wifi was out from the time we checked in on Friday night until late Saturday...not a huge thing, but with cooler cloudy weather, it becomes a bit of an issue. When we were checking in, another guest was at the desk reporting the outage, and she said that after talking to the AT&T support hotline, that the desk clerk needed to call. The clerk was very dismissive of the guest, but then when we got to the room, we found that the internet indeed did not work. When we went to the desk the next morning to tell them it still didn't work, a different person at the front desk basically seemed annoyed that ANOTHER person was telling them it didn't work. She did say they were getting a server overnighted and it would be fixed by the end of the day - and it was. We also had some issues with HBO reception in our room, but we found something else to watch and forgot to tell the desk about the problem.

I have VERY low expectations of a continental breakfast, but I walked in and walked out with just a granola bar to keep in case of hunger emergency.

We consider(ed) these "problems" minor. I look for a beautiful view, beach access, and furniture/decor that is reasonably updated in a hotel. Secondarily, I enjoy when things don't feel "busy" - I like when you can't hear kids squawking or drunk/loud people cavorting. This hotel had all these things going for it, so whatever small issues we had were water under the bridge.

We would definitely go back - especially if we got a beachfront room.

Room Tip: Second story is probably better no matter what, and beachfront rooms would be worth the $

We have stayed at Sunset Beach numerous times. The location is wonderful for us. It is close to Ding Darling, near great restaurants and traffic is avoidable. The beach for shelling is fabulous and not too crowded. At the resort is pool, tennis, shuffleboard, beach chairs and umbrellas on the beach and free bicycles. Parking is very close to room. Our room was 2 bedroom with a kitchen and living area and a nice lanai. The unit was large and quite affordable for Sanibel.

My husband and I stayed here for 10 days in December 2013. The room was very nice, clean and seemed to have been renovated pretty recently with updated furniture and bedding. It had a small kitchen with stove/oven and fridge which allowed us to save money by doing a small amount of cooking/sandwich prep in the room. The bed was very comfortable too. The breakfast that comes with your stay isn't awesome but it's not bad and again allows you to not have to eat out every meal. The beach in front of the hotel is the best.... lots of good shelling right there and plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas. All in all a good value and I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We saw that there are a few rooms in the "basement" that do not appear to have any windows...
