Reviewed May 7, 2013

My husband and I spent six days at the Sundial during the week of April 15th. We were surprised and frustrated to find that the resort was undergoing an extensive renovation. The lobby, restaurants and spa were all closed. We had to call our travel agent for help when the woman at the check in desk insisted that we reserved a garden view condo, not the ocean view we had requested. After 30 minutes and two phone calls from both our travel agent and the travel company he booked our trip through, we were finally given a very nice fourth floor condo with a beautiful view of the garden, pool and ocean. Customer service is definitely not a priority here... The woman we dealt with never cracked a smile or offered an apology for the mistake.

The condo was spacious, although in need of some minor paint and updating. The king bed room was separated from open concept living room/dining room/kitchen area by huge sliding bifold doors. The entire front of the condo had glass sliders that slid open to the screened in patio. We slept with the doors open every night and the wind through the palms and waves crashing on the beach made it feel like we were sleeping outside, beautiful and so relaxing!

The resort is right on miles and miles of shell covered beach. There was a "resort fee" of 15 dollars for the use of an umbrella or a bicycle.

Off the resort we took the tram tour of the Darling reservation (just okay), watched the sun set at Bowman Beach (beautiful), and took the Thriller boat ride out of Sanibel Marina (my favorite!) Pods of dolphins jumped and dove in the wake of the boat four separate times during the two hour trip around Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Definitely something to be experienced while on the island.

Although the resort was comfortable and well located, we will try a different hotel on our next visit.

We spent a week-end here in December, 2012. We were a group ranging in age from 1 year to 90 years in age. We rented two apartments for our group of 8. We ate at the restaurant on the property one night and found it to have a good selection. The units were very clean and the property is kept in good condition.

I was here when they were under construction however they did not tell us they were going to be under construction when we booked. So one day we could not use the big pool and there were no restaurants open. Our condo was very nice and clean tho. Once the big pool opened we spent a day there listening to construction. Also there were no towels. They were washing them for about 2 hours then ran out within 20 minutes when the pool wasn't even filled up. It was in a decent location. Overall I might book here again I would just bring my own towels and ask if they're going to be under construction.

I absolutely fell in love with this place and the island. The staff members were very friendly and accommodating. I loved the Tiki bar. There were many free rentals including bikes, kayaks, beach chairs and umbrellas. They have outdoor movies, crafts for the kids, barbeques and ping pong. There were dolphins swimming and playing right off the shore. We saw live starfish, sand dollars and snails on the shore not to mention the millions of sea shells strewn all over. Plenty of perfect unbroken ones for collecting. The beds were super comfortable with pillow top padding. Even though the buildings are a little older, they are very nicely maintained and the furnishings were updated.

Room Tip: Our room was rated a partial view, but it was an amazing view.

Resort is under construction and it needs a lot of updating and renovation. The beach and pool are awesome and the bar is nice but bartenders are slow and unwelcoming. One waiter was drunk and completely forgot to put in our food order. The condos are beautiful and very well kept. The beach is the best one we went to on the island. If the resort is updated fully and the staff is replaced, we would consider returning. Right now there is only one cafe/bar which is very overpriced with a limited menu.

We have stayed at the Sundial Resort every year for the last four years and we love it. It is perfect for our family, the rooms are beautiful, the location is awesome and the staff has been very good to us. They always put forth their best effort to accomodate in any way possible! I have found that their beaches are the best, the food is great and the rooms have always been clean! I don't think that we will ever stay anywhere else on the island! Although the price is higher than many of the other accomodations on the island, I feel that it is worth it as the staff provides great care and the property is very clean! Thanks Sundial for all of the wonderful memories throughout the year.

Room Tip: I always like the higher floors for the better view; however, every room we have stayed in there has...

We only spent two nights at Sundial as part of a longer Florida trip and enjoyed our time. The condo we used, D207 in a west building was fine. The unit was a clean, comfortable, and updated one bedroom king. While not water front, it was only 50 yards to the beach access, adjacent to a quiet pool. Yes, there is a renovation going on, but this complex is big enough that you can find quiet space if you want to. Supplied chairs, umbrellas, and beach toys are on the beach in front of the ongoing renovation (a different access point) so I guess there could have been some noise there. The beach isn't wide but quite nice. Be forewarned, you'll be happiest with beach shoes as the shells can be hard on your feet. I liked the location over further onto the island. The grocery store to use is Jerry's, and only minutes away. The bonus for me was there was daily maid service, not the norm for some rental condos, and beach towels. What I didn't like was metered phone calls - you will be charged by the minute for local calls (Sprint service was poor).
