“Nice Place - could use some updating”
Reviewed October 27, 2009

My husband and I spent 3 nights there the beginning of October. Hotel is in a very good location with a nice beach and plenty of lounge chairs set up. The room itself was ok. We had a suite and the living area was rather large, but the bedroom was small with barely any room to walk around the bed. Rooms were a bit outdated and our freezer smelled like fish. The door from the outside had large gaps around the door which allowed a lot of bugs in (found a palmetto bug flying around). Staff was friendly and breakfast was nice. We didn't rent the bikes but heard from other guests that the bikes didn't change gears too well and you really had to peddle hard to go anywhere. Overall, a nice quiet place.

We recently returned from our stay at Song of the Sea on Sanibel Island. We go there every year to celebrate our anniversary. It is a quiet little hotel to get away from our busy lives and reconnect. The rooms are nice with a kitchenette including microwave and range. Daily housekeeping service is provided and they do a good job. Some rooms overlook the beach while others overlook the pool. Breakfast is included, mostly cold cereal, juices, yogurt, fresh fruit, danishes and waffles if you choose. Beach chairs, umbrellas and bicycles are complimentary. In October, the island is quiet as compared to high season. Even though the island is small, a car is necessary. This island and hotel is not the place for people seeking nightlife but is very relaxing in Sept-Oct. The staff is helpful and friendly.

Song of the Sea gulf view rooms are just right for a relaxing trip for two. The small (30 room) hotel is in the 'old Florida style,' quaint two story buildings, pink wrought iron furniture and lizards, frogs and pretty umbrellas to make your time a nice celebration. To top it off, when we arrived a lovely bottle of wine was waiting for us in our room with a view of the glorious Gulf of Mexico. Don't be expecting bellhops and room service on Sanibel at Song of the Sea. Instead, you are warmly greeted by a staff that feels like your favorite Aunts. Breakfast on the adored tropical terrace is offered each morning in a casual and delightful set up under sunny umbrellas among gurgling fountains and a small pond. Listening to the birds frogs and smelling the flower and tree blossoms while munching on waffles you make yourself is delightful.
Each morning we were greeted by a New York Times, wonderful staff who offered advice and enthusiasm for everything we thought of, fresh fruit, pastries and juice. After breakfast, a fleet of bicycles were available for guest to use throughout their stay. This alone is a great bonus since renting bikes can be quite expensive.

Although the rooms were a bit small compared to the condominiums on the island, the view of the Gulf, the lovely pool and hot tub, plus the tropical landscaping, and beach umbrellas and lounges provided at the beach really made up for tiny spaces. Plus LXR hotels, which owns Song of the Sea, allows guests to use the tennis courts, golf course and pools at their other resorts on the island.

We were there in end of September and beginning of October with the place almost to ourselves.

A beautiful little 30 room hotel right on the beach. Almost European in style. The grounds were lush and environmentally friendly with gorgeous natives lining the short boardwalk to the beach, which had chairs and umbrellas set up.The staff treated me like family!! My room had beautiful tiled floors-no worries about sand or dripping swimsuits. It had a full kitchen. (Surprise!) And plantation shuttered doors, celing fan, and a little screened porch. Wine on arrival and the breakfast was outstanding-fresh cut fruit, fresh juices waffles, just way more than I bargained for.I was coming off a weeklong business trip and wanted a quiet place to relax. This place was it!!

I don't know why someone would give this inn a negative review. I have traveled extensively all over the world, and this is just the type of place I was looking for....I am tired of the cookie cutter, massive hotels that feel like you are in an artificial world. At times we felt we had the whole place to ourselves, that is how quiet it was.

"The Song" has a comfortable and unpretentious feel. I loved the trails created by broken shells, and the years of lovely, natural landscaping, every type of spectacular flora and fauna imaginable.

We did not have a beachfront suite, but rather stayed around the pool. Our room was perfectly clean, the bathroom had been updated with granite counter tops, and such. The clay tiles for the floor and the bamboo theme whisked me back to Thailand. I loved the fact that the decor did not interrupt the natural surroundings. I noticed another room that had a bolder decor and I don't think I would have enjoyed that.

We walked for miles up and down the beach, and even drove up to Captiva to find a better beach. In the end we came right back down to our own beach because it was as good as all the others, if not better.

The only thing that would have been a bummer, if I had not brought my own, was the fact that the management obviously skimped on the pillows. I couldn't find one pillow that I enjoyed. AND some of the decorative pillows had scratchy fabric. So, if you plan on enjoying your bed experience, don't forget to bring your own pillow!

The breakfast was fine, nothing notable, but certainly focused on healthy options. My husband was not impressed with the coffee, so he bought his own Starbucks and brewed it in our room. (some of the elements of the coffee maker were broken but still usable). A New York Times newspaper was available for free each morning so that was nice, and the fresh squeezed orange juice was a plus.

I made the reservations via the web from the LXR website. Knowing many of the fine LXR resorts I didn't think I would have to worry about the quality of the hotel. "What a Mistake" I checked the room out before we checked in and told the front desk person we did not want to stay here. She gruffly said that fine and you will lose your deposit. We stayed the night in a dated beachfront suite. The bedroom was so small you could not walk by the bed.(picture upon request). This was for my wife's 55th birthday and luckily we were able to move to Suth Seas resort, a true LXR resort.
