My husband and I just spent two nights at the Song of the Sea and would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to have a relatively quiet time on Sanibel. We stayed in a "distant gulf view room" and felt that we were ripped off as we had a downstairs unit which really only had a view of the pool. (Make sure you ask for an upstairs unit - Virtually any of them, including the pool view probably get a glimpse of the gulf, but the downstairs units will offer a glimpse - only if you stand on a chair!). In any case, with only 30 units and the biggest having a 1 bedroom suite (which is really just a room big enough for the bed), you don't have too many rug-rats roaming around. The facility provides a nice continental breakfast, bikes to ride and beach chairs and umbrellas. Caveat: they only are allowed so many umbrellas and once the quota is met, you are out of luck!) We found the restaurants on Sanibel to be mediocre at best. Thistle Lodge at Casa Ybel has very good quality (but is pricey). Whatever you do, do not go to Gullys. Redfish, Bluefish on Captiva is very good, but also pricey. Timbers was "okay." Try Amys for breakfast and go to Baileys for some great take-out pastries. For most sophisticated travelers, Sanibel's medium-priced restaurants are not up to par with major city centers; however, the island affords a very relaxing getaway.
